ANNOTATION
“The Heroes Went, They Went. Fifty Third Infant Reserve Regiment during the World War 1 /1915-1918/” is the title of the newest book of the historian from Regional Historical Museum – Kustendil – Angel Dzhonev. 53-rd infant reserve regiment had multi-ethnical nature but it was consistent mainly with soldiers from the regions of Kiustendil and Radomir as well as with Bulgarian people from the region of Bosilegrad. Later, there were additions of fighters from Pirin Macedonia, Shumen and Razgrad regions. Ankhialo, Vizantiia i bulgarskite vladeteli prez Srednovekovieto

by Valia Georgieva

ANNOTATION
Ankhilo! An antique town from the Western-Pontic Sea coast which keeps in secret its history during the millennia! What is Ankhilo? Is it a Thracian, Greek or Roman city, preferred for the salt, the “Sacred Lake” and for the convenient port or is it the “apple of discord”?! During the Antiquity – between Apollonia and Messambria and then, during the next centuries – between Byzantium and Bulgaria. It survived some destructions and hundreds of attacks on the full with eternal glory Ankhilo’s field and under the “high walls” of the fortress. The historical science does not know its exact date of creation yet. It is not known its founder’s name, too…

by Vitka Toshkova

Prof. Vitka Toshkova studies issues on foreign policy relations of Bulgaria during the 20th century with part of the countries which multiple times interfered with the destiny of Bulgaria – Germany, Russia/USSR, USA. Bulgarska istoriia. Vol. I. Bulgarska istoriia pod imeto na khunite

by Gavril Krustevich

ANNOTATION
This book was published for the first time in 1869 in the Ottoman city of Constantinople. The book is a bibliographic rarity today and it is an exceptional monument of the Bulgarian culture. It has been written by one of the most educated Bulgarians not just for his time, but also even for the recent times, who spoke the languages spoken in the Ottoman Empire, educated in Greek, Old-Greek, Latin, French. He graduated as a jurist, he was a member of the Supreme Judicial Council of the Ottoman Empire, one of the founders of the Bulgarian Exarchy and the Ruler of Eastern Rumelia from 1884 to the Union between Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia in 1885.
The effort this book to be published in contemporary Bulgarian is connected with the wish to be blown the dust away which has covered with the time this treasure of the Bulgarian historical thought and it will be a valuable addition to every collection with historical literature. It will be useful handbook to students, teachers and scientists as well as to everyone else interested in the historical past of the Bulgarian people.

Znatsi na prekhoda

by Ivan Granitski

ANNOTATION
“Znatsi na prekhoda” is a book which has been born from the whirlpool of public passions in Bulgaria during the last years, from the clash of two trends – the adventures of the nihilism and the unbornness, carried out with the tireless passion of a handful of sorosoids and well-paid protesters and the timid awakening of patriotic energy as a counterbalance to the policy of the rulers of Bulgaria.
The first section of the book contains interviews published on the pages of some of the Bulgarian newspapers as well as in some of the Bulgarian news web-sites. The second and the third section cover articles and portraits devoted to bright personalities of the contemporary intellectual life in Bulgaria – scientists, directors, actors, writers. I consciously has chosen the principle of contrast and the spiritual antithesis – the Sun versus the Shadow, the Harmony versus the Chaos. This is how I see the Bulgarian transition (the period from the fall of the communist rule in 1989 until present days) – lofty people who build the Temple of the Bulgarian spirituality and national identity versus dark lombrosian people who by some kind of evil irony have been sent to the Bulgarians as a political elite but actually they are just ordinary hamsters and national traitors.” – Ivan Granitski
On the traditional annual awards of the Union of the Bulgarian Writers for 2016 the author Ivan Granitski was awarded in the “Literature critique” section for his books “Obraz i metafora” and “Znatsite na prekhoda” (the present one).

Zhivot po treta kniga na prorok Ezdra

by Ivan Radev

ANNOTATION
“Looking for an answer to some of the secrets from the Bulgarian past – in close connection with the particular destiny of the Bulgarian people and by this way of its nature – I started to live with the suggestion that in a whole, they are prophetically anticipated in so called “Ezra's Third Book”. The truth is that, as a people, the Bulgarians came to the Balkans after the next migration of people, when the “image of the world” here was already completed – with its religious doctrine, with its state hierarchy and social stratification, with its philosophy and value system, with the rituals, art, literature and culture. This condemned the Bulgarians to bifurcation and threatening, to endless crisis conditions, to constantly maintained sometimes smoldering, sometimes exploding conflict…” - Ivan Radev
The book deals with life and works of some key figures from the Bulgarian history, such as Paisii Hilendarski, Neofit Bozveli, Vasil Levski, Georgi Benkovksi, as well as with some events from the Bulgarian history primarily after the Bulgarian liberation from Ottoman slavery.

Andrei Lukanov bez predrazsudutsi | 20 godini po-kusno

by Co.

ANNOTATION
This book contains unpublished speeches of friends and enemies of Andrei Lukanov (1938 – 1996; a Bulgarian politician, the last communist Prime Minister of Bulgaria). These speeches were recorded after his death and they were kept in secret for 20 years.
Why the transition in Bulgaria was peaceful but not as the one in Romania which started with blood? How was the ethnical peace kept? How did the reforms in Bulgaria start and what were Andrei Likanov’s plans about Bulgaria after the ruling of Zhan Videnov?
Two decades after his assassination, nine speeches of his friends and enemies are published for the first time. Their authors are Petur Dertliev, Liubomir Sobadzhiev, Liuben Berov, Dimitur Batalov, Ivan Chernozemski, Doncho Donchev, Ivan Anastasov, Lukanov's secretary Svetla Maslarova, and Sofiia Lukanova.
This is a book which breaks myths. You will not learn here more about his assassination or who killed him. But you will find out who really he was, what was his role in the transition from totalitarianism to democracy and what was his place in the complicated political mosaic in the beginning of the 90-s.

by Panko Anchev

ANNOTATION
This book studies the ideas of Georgi S. Rakovski – the 19th-century Bulgarian revolutionary, freemason, writer and an important figure of the Bulgarian National Revival and resistance against Ottoman rule. The book does not study his occasions, nor it is not a biography of his life – it is about his ideology and aesthetics, about his way of thinking and of his realization about life and about the political revolution.

Prezidentut Petur Stoianov: Pregovor na istoriiata

ANNOTATION
This book is published with connection with the 20th anniversary from the election of Petur Stoianov for president of Bulgaria. The collection includes articles, speeches and interviews of the president for Bulgarian and foreign media. 1876 • Za robskoto v robstvoto i svobodata v razloma

by Simeon Ianev

ANNOTATION
The main purpose of this book is to show the April Uprising from 1876 (the biggest uprising of the Bulgarians against the Ottoman slavery) neither in its triumphs and enthusiasm, nor in its falls and the defeats as being this done frequently in the past but to show the personal, the psychic experience of the freedom – the freedom as an ability to take the responsibility for the freedom of others and the most important as an ability to find the key to the psychic status of your own people. And this is the core of the purpose – the slavish, which overcoming is the freedom itself. And if from 1876 until now there are huge literature available – scholar and popular historical one, memoires, archival-documentary one, fictional and poetic one, partially sociological one, then about the uprising as a psychic problem through the personalities and through the collective body there is almost nothing except some old clichés.
On the traditional annual awards of the Union of the Bulgarian Writers for 2016 the author Simeon Ianev was awarded in the “Journalism” section for his book “1876”.

Vuzrozhdenskiiat protses v Bulgariia

by Stoian Mikhailov

ANNOTATION
Stoian Mikhailov is a prominent Bulgarian sociologist. He has written many books, articles and surveys concerning the political history of Bulgaria and the communist period (1944 - 1989). For two decades he has worked as a senior statesman and communist actor in the 1970s and 1980s. He is known for his uncompromising honesty - not only in science but also in politics. He has the courage already in 1987 to clearly state to Todor Zhivkov that Bulgaria is entering a crisis and needs a change of policy in order to overcome it. The book "Vuzrozhdenskiiat protses v Bulgariia" was published in 1992. Then it had an intriguing audience - it was discussed in hundreds of meetings with Bulgarians and patriots. This is a second edition. It is complemented by new texts. And with a unique document: A note to the Bulgarian communist leader Todor Zhivkov about the policy towards Bulgarian Turks. Its arguable position was against the renaming of 1984-85 as a form of intent for the integration of the Bulgarian Turks.

V kazarmata i na fronta s Dimcho Debelianov

by Tikhomir Gerov

ANNOTATION
The author of this book – Tihomir Gerov was born in 1890. Together with the famous Bulgarian poet and author Dimcho Debelianov (1887 - 1916) was at the Reserve Officers School. He was a participant in the World War 1 (1914-1918) as platoon and rotary commander at the staff of the 22nd Infantry Thracian Regiment where the destiny connected him again with the poet Debelianov. Gerov graduated “Slavic philology”, his teaching activity is mostly at the Samokov High School (1922-1950) where he was a head of the high school for two times. During the 20-s and the 30-s of the 20th century various books and publications presented Dimcho Debelianov’s personality and work one-sided and reversible. With a sense of duty to his memory, Gerov decided to publish his memories about their cohabitation in the town of Samokov, in the barracks, on the front in 1916. He made his story not just about the life experience – he enriched it with an analysis of separate works by Debelianov, their work history, with data about his interest to the foreign literature etc. The result is a strict documentary presentation both on the events led to Debelianov’s death and on his poetry. “V kazarmata i na fronta s Dimcho Debelianov” (“In the Barraks and on the Front with Dimcho Debelianov”) was published in 1957 – just a month before the author’s death. The book contrasted sharply on the notion about his poetry and about his fate with the times when it appeared – in the communist regime in Bulgaria. By this reason it was not accepted well and in the most cases the literature critique from these times ignored it. The publishers aims with the present edition not just to remind for the 100th anniversary from the poet’s death but also to find its readers.

Charodeetsut Neron (1933-1992) / Neron the Enchanter

by Aksiniia Dzhurova, Prof.

ANNOTATION
From October 3rd 2016 to November 28th 2016 an exhibition of one of the most enigmatic Bulgarian artists, Dimitar Kazakov – Neron was held at , Gallery Loran, Sofia Bulgaria. The curator of the event was Prof. Axinia Dzurova. The 14 artworks presented were selected from private collections especially for this exposition. Visitors had the opportunity to view works from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s — the most fruitful and creative periods of the artist, who had become a legend even during his lifetime, and was recognized as equal in talent to the world-class names of fine art. Executed either in oil or acrylic paints, in aquarelle or using the technique of woodcarving, Neron’s works are magical tales about the weaving of ancient myths into traditional Bulgarian rituals. The Bulgarian land, studded with ‘millennial archaeological layers’, was the artist’s greatest inspiration.
The exposition at Loran presented works from all the emblematic cycles in Kazakov’s oeuvre: ‘Motherhood’, 1960s; ‘Family’, 1960s; ‘St. Lazar’s Day Maidens’, 1974; and ‘Masks’, 1980s, among others. The public will certainly be impressed by his large-format canvases — ‘Daughter of a Thracian’, 1980, and ‘Composition’, 1980, with their verse perspective typical of the artist; the unique combination of different viewpoints on the world enhances the viewer’s feeling for the fairy-tale, mythological time in which Neron’s personages live.
The title of the exhibition, ‘Neron, the Enchanter’, was inspired by the film about Dimitar Kazakov (1979) by the famous French writer and critic Jean-Marie Drot, as part of the series ‘Artists – Enchanters, from France and Elsewhere’ (1980): ‘Kazakov is an authentic artist-magician, in other words, an artist whose works, apart from their purely artistic qualities, exert an enchantment upon the viewer in the true sense of the word, as did fairy-tales and legends of old...’ (Dzurova, A., ‘The Myth Dimitar Kazakov – Neron’, Sofia, 2003).
The present book is the catalogue which accompanied the exhibition. The text in the catalog is mainly only in Bulgarian but the paintings’ names are in Bulgarian and in English.

S risunkata pravia chovetsi

by Iliia Beshkov

ANNOTATION
After the military coup in 1934 when censorship stopped the left oriented newspapers in Bulgaria where Iliia Beshkov (1901-1958) published his unsparing political caricatures, he became caught up with creative rabies to draw everything which humans do thinking they will never be caught. He looked into the home and the social baths, into the brothels, into the cabarets, into the bedrooms. This is a trip of the painter who can see the nature of the king and the political clique which were made from the friendly environment – the life of the urban human with all of the passions and vices which turns him/her into a loyal follower, forgiving the corruption of his/hers rulers. There is no such of analogy – neither in Bulgaria, nor outside its borders in the period of the two world wars – of such of painter’s behavior which rebukes the over-aroused men, the lustful widows, the hurrying to the bed husbands, the seducing ones, the making sex ones… It is understandable that the most innocent Beshkov’s paintings have been showed so far. During the decades, his aroused paintings await their publicity.
The present edition collects 180 paintings, most of them presented for the first time. They present him as an exceptional painter and a tireless seeker of the truth about the human. All the lust, the deformity, the beauty of his characters are his offspring which he loves without making them up, without ridiculing them, without hating them…

The third part from the set “120 Years Bulgarian Art” continues the systematization devoted to the decorative-applied arts, the systematization of new and contemporary Bulgarian art. This part is focused on the design in its numerous forms. This subject is boldly important due the edition is situated literally in the middle of information void regarding this subject of study. The reason is that there is almost no in debt research works and scholar systematizations on the design in Bulgaria.

120 godini ot rozhdenieto na Tsanko Lavrenov

by Co.

ANNOTATION
From June 07th 2016 to August 14th 2016 the exhibition “Between the Modern and The Canon: 120 years since the birth of Tsanko Lavrenov” was held at the Sofia Art Gallery. The exhibition was dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the birth of the great artist Tsanko Lavrenov (1896–1978). The initiator of the celebration was the Tsanko Lavrenov Foundation, while the project was realised by Sofia City Art Gallery, the Tsanko Lavrenov Foundation and the City Art Gallery – Plovdiv, under the patronage of Yordanka Fandakova, Mayor of Sofia. This retrospective exposition included artworks from the collections of state and municipal museums and galleries in the country, the largest being that of the Plovdiv City Art Gallery, with 65 paintings. The other collection of significant size is that of the Tsanko Lavrenov Foundation. Private collectors have also contributed. After the latest major exhibition at the Bulgarian National Gallery in 2002, this is the first comprehensive exhibition, which, in a novel way, acquainted the audience with the oeuvre of one of the most interesting figures in Bulgarian art. The exhibition included over 300 artworks, whether paintings, drawings, graphic art, or applied art projects. It is a conceptually ambitious project aimed at presenting Tsanko Lavrenov’s art in its completeness and entirety—from his very early works to his final composition. Its realization was achieved through a thorough examination of the personal archive of the artist, which is now available for publication for the first time. The rich documentary section was integrated with the pictorial material. The exhibition, based on a detailed study of Lavrenov’s biography, revealed to the audience hitherto unknown aspects of the artist’s oeuvre.
The present book is the catalog which accompanied the exhibition. The text in the catalog is mainly only in Bulgarian but the paintings’ names are in Bulgarian and in English.

Vasil Stoilov (1904 - 1990) - Nepokazvana kolektsiia. 17.05.2016 - 28.06.2016

by Co.

ANNOTATION
From May 17th 2016 to June 28th 2016 a remarkable exposition of artworks not previously shown to the public, by the great Bulgarian artist Vasil Stoilov (1904–1990) was held at Gallery Loran, Sofia Bulgaria. The event ranked among the most significant occasions in the entire ten-year history of the gallery. This collection, coming to light for the first time, astonished everyone and provoked the interest of even the greatest connoisseurs of the artist’s oeuvre.
Vasil Stoilov’s exhibitions worldwide have been numerous. His artistic heritage is well researched and documented. This is why the appearance of this collection, kept ‘hidden’ from the attention of all art lovers for decades, deserves special attention. Gallery Loran’s goal, after purchasing the works from a private collection, was to present to the public these new acquisitions in all their magnificence. The exhibited works revealed various creative periods of Vasil Stoilov’s – from his very early oil landscapes, influenced by his teacher Tseno Todorov, through his natural impressions created in the 1930s, to the artist’s mature hand in his emblematic portraits from the 1950s and 1960s. What unites them is the unchanging message of the artist – his clear awareness and primordial belief in the messianic role of the creator and of art. The exposition also owed its polyphonic nature to the variety of genres represented.
The rich history of this unique collection is documented in detail and, for connoisseurs, Gallery Loran has published the present catalog to accompany the exhibition. The text in the catalog is mainly only in Bulgarian but the paintings’ names are in Bulgarian and in English.

Putuvane s Boris Denev (1883-1969). Nepokazvani peizazhi

by Co.

ANNOTATION
Studying Boris Denev’s art and path of life is a process which requires delving into an abundance of facts. His personality combines and entangles talents, personal views, inclinations and relations with a number of intellectual and other circles all of which would fully explain the maintained interest in this artist lasting for more than 100 years now (he displayed in 1908 for the first time a few works and organized 25 one-man exhibitions during his lifetime), the deep respect for his memory and his contribution to our national culture.
The present book is a catalog of the exhibition “Journey with Boris Denev (1883-1969). Unexhibited Landscapes” held at Loran Gallery, Sofia from April 20th 2017 to May 26th 2017.

Moneti na vizantiiskata familiia paleolozi v parichno obrushtenie na bulgarskata durzhava 1259-1396. / The Coins of the Byzantine Paleologos Family in the Coin Circulation of the Bulgarian Kingdom in Period 1259-1396. Vol. 1 and vol. 2

by Konstantin Dochev

ANNOTATION
This is a set of two volumes which presents coins Byzantine family Paleologists in money circulation in the Bulgarian country. Vol. 1 –main text – text in Bulgarian, summary in English. Vol. 2 – catalogue – parallel text in Bulgarian and English.
The study is the first of its kind in Bulgaria in respect of the processes and phenomena in the sphere of monetary circulation in the Bulgarian Kingdom for a period of nearly 140 years. Unlike other local studies with similar subject matter, which examine separate larger urban centres and their adjacent territories and settlement conurbation, this study covers the largest possible area with the aim of obtaining more comprehensive information about the collective and individual finds from the said period and the relevant objective conclusions about the role and importance of the Byzantine coins of the Palaeologos dynasty in Bulgarian money circulation in the second half of the 13th and the entire 14th century. The obtained data, compared with the sparse available written records, prove to be a very valuable source of information about the little researched monetary practices in Byzantium and in the Bulgarian Kingdom during the said period, as regards the continued existence of the Balkan area of manifestation and functioning of the Byzantine gold hyperpyron, established as early as in the 12th century and functioning as the main national and international monetary unit, originally used widely in the Bulgarian Kingdom after 1186, and after 1204 in other countries despite the radical territorial changes caused by the Fourth Crusade and the apportionment of the Byzantine Empire among the participants in the crusade.

Dimitur Kirchev. Zhivopis

by Kostadin Otonov

ANNOTATION
"To transform his ideas into art, Dimitar Kirchev puts an emphasis on those fragments of the visual word which possess certain symbolism. If we accept the environment, which surrounds us as a perfect composition in motion and ourselves as distant observers then his approach seems classical despite of his peculiarities in style.
His aspiration is to outline details, which give character and state. He reduces the object of his art to the symbol of some definite, sought, experienced and received implication. This is often achieved with color or form and submitted to the rhythm of shape.
The artist clarifies and simplifies the colorful spot, searching for previously considered total emotional effect of the interaction of the shades and the perfect surface of the canvas. You can follow the sequence and the temperament of the gestures he uses to lay the paint, to feel the distance of his presence in front of his works of art.
The visions are often simple, a result of a situation, free from details, frontal, symmetric and well balanced in the whole composition. The purpose is not to narrate but to shift one idea into another by the means of the painting.
Subsequent in its development, the personal style of Dimitar Kirchev enters the modern Bulgarian art revealing him as an artist who combines the figurative with abstract thinking." - Krasimir Linkov
The present catalog is from the Dimitar Kirchev's exhibition held in Art Galeriia Geshov, Sofia from June 2nd 2017 to June 20th 2017.

Pravoslavnoto uchenie za svetite ikoni

by Liubomir Tenekedzhiev

ANNOTATION
This work analyses the Orthodox teaching of worshiping of the holy icons, dogmatized in Nicaea at the Seventh Ecumenical Council (787). Unfortunately this very important truth for the Orthodox Church is, in some extend, unconscious from the contemporaries and it is accepted only by the power of the tradition without getting into the deep dogmatic content of the iconostasis. Often, the holy icons are considered just as art. But in the common consciousness of the Church and in the intimate experiences of each single Christian they have deep dogmatic and liturgical nature.

by Aleksandur Tomov

ANNOTATION
Failed maturation; mixing the virtual with the life reality; desperate aggression in seeking of identity, confession, presence… And sad looks to an unhappy childhood which just as thin threads only fragments from “The Little Prince” left from. “Nickname Teenager” is a typical novel about a young man who have no other supports than his own twisted understandings for good and evil, for humiliation and significance. And this detachment from the outside world makes it difficult to separate the killer from the victim…

V tozi krai na sveta. Lirika

by Andrei Andreev

ANNOTATION
”The newest book by Andrei Andreev – “V tozi krai na sveta” (“At this Part of the World”) is full with somehow extraneous for this poet energy of rebellion, doubt, disagreement, objection. Andreev, during the years, was considered mostly as a poet of pastoral, of light suggestions, of the dignity of love, goodwill, and all-pervading lyrical inventions. But now, with this book, he surprises us and even scare us. No doubt this is a book of the cruel confession, the raw balance, the glaring doubt, the disputed disagreement, the uninterrupted rejection…” Ivan Granitski

“Mercy to Language” is the title of few but very valuable poems in the second book by Boriana Katsarska. I believe its publishing will not be unnoticed by the connoisseurs of High Poetry! Boriana Katsarska has memory for the language of her ancestors (biological or literature), but when she turns to the poems by other poets where she feels “kinship by choice” then her poems speak on its own language and with special attention to the poetic form.” Ivan Tsanev

Ne e vreme za krasivi istorii

by Vesela Liutskanova

ANNOTATION
It is not time for beautiful stories? Or perhaps it is the right time for them? Stories about love and friendship, about our devotion to one another, about care for adolescents, about the rise and fall of the spirit, which are in our hands, about everything beautiful which we should not go with indifference, about the recognition without denial and about a beautiful and better world which we should bequeath to the next generations. With warmth and mastery, with deep psychology and emotional style, proven in an indisputable way until now by Vesela Liutskanova, her newest short stories, most of them firstly published in the USA and France, in Cyprus and Italy, and just five in the Bulgarian press, will touch the fans of fine prose.

Zagaduchnite tangriti - Prikazki za bulgarskite vladeteli

by Ilina Kirina

ANNOTATION
Fruit-bearing is the idea of Ilina Kirina to tell the history of the Bulgarian rulers in the form of tales for children and for their parents. Even more fruit-bearing is her idea two realities to alternate: the present days – with children-heroes, and past – a story by reliable historical clues. Thus the author achieves by one side a truthful characteristic of child psychic with its specific interests to puzzles, curious stories and contemporary relationships and by the other – the picture of the complicated historical fate of the Bulgarian people. This book is the first part of this kind of series and it includes some of the brightest kans in the Bulgarian history – Kubrat, Asparuh, Kuber, Tervel and Krum with their contribution for stabilization and validation of the authority and the strength of the Bulgarian country.

Ostrov "Krakh"

by Ina Vulchanova

ANNOTATION
“What we call “collapse” and is this thing even exist? Or what we call “success” and “victory”? “Ostrov Krakh” (“Island Collapse”) is not a dark novel, don’t be misled by the title. I hope I made it even a little funny. It tells about the passion to control completely the world and about the passion to be free. It is also about the strange thing we call “destiny”. And the destiny’s moves always bring some irony with them. The novel tells about two women who tell. Each of them know her own part of the story and the separate pieces must click as a puzzle. It is about the personal universes we live in – how to separate one of other and how they look alike. It is about women, about men, about children, about cats. It is about an island. It is about zodiac signs and about the biggest gain of the lottery. But it is not about collapse.” – the author.
Ina Vulchanova is a contemporary Bulgarian author and script writer. The present novel’s manuscript won the big prize in the Bulgarian literature concurs “Razvitie” in April, 2016.

Bulgarska khristomatiia - Otechestvo i svoboda

by Co.

ANNOTATION
In the last few years a process of removing from the curriculum of valuable works by Bulgarian classical authors was started. Such of works as those by Ivan Vazov, Khristo Botev, Liuben Karavelov, Zakharii Stoianov, Stoian Mihailovski, Pencho Slaveikov, Khristo Smirnenski, Geo Milev, Nikola Vaptsarov… Even the famous Slavo-Bulgarian History by Paisii Hilendarski was scheduled. As a counterweight, the present “Bulgarska khristomatiia (Otechestvo i svoboda)” (“Bulgarian Reader (Homeland and Liberty)”) contains exemplary works by Old-Bulgarian sources, by the folklore works, by the renaissance literature as well as new Bulgarian literature from its rising to the present days. The edition is also devoted in helping the recovery of pure and alive Bulgarian language in the psychological and intonation space in the borders of Bulgaria.

Krugut Misul. V godinata na golemite literaturni iubilei

by Mikhail Nedelchev

ANNOTATION
“Misul” (“Thought”) is the most valuable Bulgarian collective literature person. This is the Four and the only Four: Pencho Slaveikov – the epic, Dr. Krustio Krustev – the critic, Petko Todorov – the one who in its idols and dramas conceived the Bulgarian folklore culture in a modern spirit, Peio Iavorov – the tragic poet. With the Iavorov’s attraction to this circle, it became closed, completed. It is namely a circle because it wasn’t opened, other writes could not be fit “inside”. Everyone from the Great Four had his own role as well as his particular literature personality.

Kambanata

by Nedialko Slavov

ANNOTATION
“Kambanata” is similar to Georgi Bojinov’s novel “Kalunia-kalia” – the same shocking images of violence and cruelty, the same sharp feeling for justice, passion in love and primary feeling for nature. But one new Kalunio appears here in the name of the former prisoner Veno – a protector of the weak and defenseless Bulgarians in supposedly free Bulgaria. Ironically just he must beat the arming bell for salvation…

Zapadnoevropeiska literatura, part 9 i 10

by Simeon Khadzhikosev

ANNOTATION
“During the first half of 2013 and the first half of 2014 I was working on the 9th and the 10th volume of my “West-European Literature” which are combined by a common chronological border and a topical unity and are marked with the sub-title “Early European Modernism (1848-1914)”. Unexpected circumstances prevented the publishing of volume 9 in 2014. At the end of the same year, it was decided these two volumes to be published in a bigger one in order they to be available sooner to the readers. Perhaps it is useless to remind that this voluminous volume is devoted to students, university teachers and to everyone else interested in the European literature.” – the author.
The volume presents:
Charles Baudler
Paul Werlen
Arthur Rembo
Stefan Malmerme
Joris-Carl Yusmans
Emil Zola

Ville de Lille-Adan
Oscar Wild
Friedrich Nietzsche

Stanislav Pishbishevski

Kraliat fizionomist - avtotekstualnost i avtoprezentirane v tvorchestvoto na Pencho Slaveikov

by Sirma Danova

ANNOTATION
The book by Sirma Danova is a contribution for the understanding of the Bulgarian modernism and the work of the classical Bulgarian author Pencho Slaveikov. The text presents a more nuanced Slaveikov’s image and a sharper insight of the complexity of his position in the Bulgarian canon. The book is written in a style which keeps the idea and the conventions of the scientific monograph but it also goes beyond that – it encourages the reader to start to understand and to take the risks and the pleasures connected with the thinking about the literature.

Increasing the number of favorite books, the number of discoveries increases too and a need of sharing what is found appears which turned into a document of past and of the human relationships hidden behind the covers of often forgotten books. This is what Dr. Toni Zarev have done in his second book. It is kind of continuation of his first book – “Literaturen detektiv” (“Literature Detective”). Here, there is chronological and illustrative story about the unknown and found by him book treasures. All of this is written in an easy to read manner, as a novel, which actually is our past and present. By this, the author gives exact diagnosis and curious image about books, people and events.

Subrani proizvedeniia. Vol. II. Razkazi. Feiletoni

by Chudomir

ANNOTATION
This is vol. 2 from the set of selected works by the famous Bulgarian writer and painter – Chudomir (Dimitur Chorbadzhiiski, born 1890 – died 1967).
“The texts in this volume have been written between the years 1933 and 1940. They were published as sublimes to a newspaper in Sofia. But the slimness which is in the lower stages of the Bulgarian press didn’t allow them to grow and they left tiny and somehow underdeveloped. Are they short stories, feuilletons or something else – the specialists should say. In spite their numerous disadvantages the readers continue to look for them. And perhaps, they are truthful native images from these times sprinkled with humor” Chodomir.

Choveshkoto tialo mezhdu vuplutenostta i konventsiiata. Suvremenni perspektivi

by Stoian Stavru

ANNOTATION
“I am sure that every jurist knows what the anatomy is for but just few ones know when it is about another science – phenomenology. In this edition an attempt for opposition is done, from one side, of the “strong of the day” anatomy which turned the human body into an object of observation, studying and influences and from the other side, of much less known phenomenology, revealing fleshiness as a subject of knowledge, action and will. Through the paths of the epistemology and with the examples of the neuropathology are interpreted some classical philosophical question and their juridical implications connected with the identity, the personal integrity and the legal regulation of fleshiness” – the author.

Maks Reger i prostranstvoto na organnata pesen do Purvata svetovna voina

by Albena Kekhlibareva-Stoianova

ANNOTATION
Max Reger (1873 – 1916) was a German composer, pianist, organist, conductor, and academic teacher. He worked as a concert pianist, as a musical director at the Leipzig University Church, as a professor at the Royal Conservatory in Leipzig, and as a music director at the court of Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen. Reger first composed mainly Lieder, chamber music, choral music and works for piano and organ. He later turned to orchestral compositions, such as the popular Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Mozart, and to works for choir and orchestra such as Gesang der Verklärten (1903), Der 100. Psalm (1909), Der Einsiedler and the Hebbel Requiem (both 1915).
The present book is one of few books about Reger written in Slav language at all. Both this and the easy to read but universal style of the text make this work exceptional and attractive for the reader. A wonderful edition with rich illustrative material.

Bilkovata tetradka na Vanga

by Co.

ANNOTATION
Vanga (1911-1996) – a world famous Bulgarian prophet who, by some people believes, had the ability to see every human’s destiny. Some people believed she had the gift to predict the future, to visit spiritually various places and to talk with flowers.
But except these abilities, she knew how to apply the nature’s wisdom in any kind of illness. She helped many people with different complaints and symptoms. She correctly diagnosed their illness and then she precisely advised what kind of herbs would help. “Nature is the best healer! I don’t believe in pills”, Vanga said in 1983 when her first pains appeared and the doctors said she to take medications. The recipes, bequeathed by her, heal even today thanks to her carefully kept notebooks.

Obiasnenie i razbirane

by Konstantin Ianakiev, Ivan Kolev

ANNOTATION
The conference “Obiansenie i razbirane” (“Explanation and Understanding”) tried to provoke thinking and discussion about the relationships between natural and humanitarian sciences. The only one thing which the word “university” means is perhaps ideal. But the understanding between these two types of disciplines might be their task. And this task’s solving depends on the ability of each of these two sides to get into the position of the other one. The result, presented by the published in this collection reports, is the meeting of two points of view, one, under the influence of the “hard” sciences, and the other – of the “soft” ones.

Chovekut za prodan • Filosofsko-antropologichni i aksiologichni izmereniia

by Nonka Bogomilova - compiler

ANNOTATION
How is it so, that falling into the labyrinth of the “social market”, the reasoning and moral by his/hers nature human (according Kant) often sells his/hers dignity turning it into an exchange value for tempting benefits paying high price for that – receives his/hers “equivalent” or twin, he/she turns into merchandise which can be bought and sold: from the devil, from God, from the evil, from “social builders”, from media? In the “bargaining” which is lead for the price different values is being traded, replaced for goods with temporary and “inflated” user value: the youth, the glory, the money, the career, external, questionable supports of the personal dignity. The metaphysical sales of souls make possible the sales of bodies in the widest possible sense of the concept. Where does this eternal human drama start from and where does it lead to?

Prisustvie i otsustvie I & II / Presence and Absence 2015/2017

by Elena Peteva

ANNOTATION
``My work is the allegorical image of the human condition. The external is emblematic for the internal – the external image reveals the internal condition or the image personalizes the idea. I use the face, the hands, the formal and technical solutions, and my work process as allegorical means through which I try to catch the human presence, condition and transience.
The epimeric essence of ‘now’, the memory for the past (‘before’) and the sense what is coming (‘after’) create one bigger and much real reality in which in the same time exists our presence and absence. I often think that what I strive to do in my work is to present things which cannot be presented.`` – Elena Peteva
Elena Peteva was born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1978 but in 1995 she moved to the United States where she studied at the Interlochen Art Academy with a full stipend. In 2004 she received her CFA degree in painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 2007 she received the MFA degree in painting from Syracuse University. From 2010 to 2012 she was an Assistant Professor of Painting, Printmaking and Drawing at Dominican University in Chicago and since 2012 she has been teaching at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth as an Assistant Professor and Drawing in the BFA abd MFA programs. Mitologemi na geroichnoto / Mythologems of the Heroic

by Co.

ANNOTATION
The Museum of Socialist Art presents in the exhibition “Mythologems of the Heroic” (May-November 2017) the art of the Socialist period. Following ‘The Image of the Leader’, the attention of the public is directed to the image of the anti-fascist hero. The exhibition includes 60 works of painting and graphic art by Iliya Petrov, Stoyan Venev, Stoyan Sotirov, Nenko Balkanski, Nikola Mirchev, Marko Behar, Hristo Neykov, and Todor Panayotov, among others. For several years following 9 September 1944 and as a result of the political, economic, and social change that occurred in Bulgaria, propaganda functions were imposed on art. One of the most important themes in art became that of the revolutionary, also known as the historic-revolutionary, historic-heroic, etc. It reproduced and glorified significant facts and events from the activities of the leftist progressive forces in Bulgarian society, including the September Uprising of 1923, the underground anti-fascist struggle, the partisan movement, and the events surrounding 9 September 1944. ‘The Hero’ is a specific imagerial category and one of the central mythologems in the art of Socialism, charged with the task of creating idealistic objects of worship and role models. The range of values includes moral and ethical categories such as bravery, determination, self-sacrifice, self-denial, and heroism in the name of the ideal of freedom. Following the April Plenum of the Bulgarian Communist Party in 1956, Bulgarian art gradually liberated itself from the restrictive dogmas of Socialist Realism. The rehabilitation of the personal civic and creative position and the return to the essential dimensions of the artistic process also found expression in the interpretation of the revolutionary theme. It was during this period that the most significant exemplars were created, marking some of the highest achievements in Bulgarian art. During the 1970s and 1980s, the revolutionary heroic theme was placed on the personal scale of plastic and philosophical values in an effort to be perused from the position of contemporaneity and with hindsight. The greater the distance of each next generation, the more the focus of attention shifted from the concrete historical fact to the idea of its intransient and universal human meaning. The works on display reveal the rich spectrum of the emotionally psychological states in which the heroic theme manifests itself, whether in a poetic, romantic, or pathetic light. Its dynamic over the years has been achieved from the concretely individual in the historical personality, through the collective type of the hero fighter, to the allegorically symbolic generalizations of the heroic as a whole, and the revelation of its psychological essence.
The present book is the catalog which accompanies the exhibition. The catalog is bilingual - in Bulgarian and in English.

(Ne)Poznati istorii / (Un)Known Stories

by Konstantin Shturkelov

ANNOTATION
Going more than a century back in time, the Loran Gallery presented 36 remarkable examples of the lesser known work of Konstantin Shturkelov – ‘The King of Watercolour’. The exhibition showed extremely rare works from the artist's stay in Odessa in 1909 and from his great European trip in the spring of 1912, as well as the exotic watercolor of the pyramids near Giza from 1926. For the first time, and for a short while only, private collections opened for the public showing of magnificent watercolors and valuable drawings from the artist's participation in the Balkan Wars and the First World War, as well as an interesting collection of portraits in various techniques that tell the (un)known story of Shtarkelov as a portraitist. Last but not least, the exhibition presented the theme of nature – from the flower as a small detail to wide landscape panoramas, Shturkelov demonstrates not only technical perfection, but also his experiencing of nature as a specific state of the spirit.
The exhibition (held from June 15th 2017 to July 29th 2017) was accompanied with the present catalog which contains rich information material about the painter. The text in the catalog is in Bulgarian and in English.

It is hard to imagine modern art in Bulgaria without Rumen Scorchev (1932 - 2015) because he is one of the authors who shaped national plasticity culture of the second half of the 20-th century in Bulgaria. His bright figure stands out with his qualities of a talented artist and a renaissance personality. A painter who has passed through his rough life time condign and full. Intelligent, astute, extremely well-read, he has left behind him several generations of pupils, thousands of works, hundreds of illustrated books. And last but not least, he has left an example of dedication in work and integrity in art. He has more than 40 national and international awards.

Suvremenno bulgarsko izkustvo. Imena. Khristo Stefanov. Predstaven ot Chavdar Popov / Modern Bulgarian Art. Names. Christo Stefanov. Presented by Chavdar Popov

by Chavdar Popov

ANNOTATION
Text in Bulgarian and English. The collection "Modern Bulgarian Art. Names" presents 100 eminent Bulgarian painters.
Khristo Stefanov (1931—2013) belongs to the generation of master painters which entered and establish itself in Bulgarian artistic life in the 1960s. It is a very specific stage in the history of Bulgarian Art. It is "split in halves" between disappearing "classical" socialist realism and emerging changes which started in the second half of the 1970s and 1980s. Khristo Stefanov has always been a painter who along with the big and important social questions, experienced and revealed in his work the everyday, intimate, directly-human establishment. He has got his unique place in the panorama of contemporary visual plasticity arts in Bulgaria. His name stands duly and honourably together with Bulgarian bright and eminent masters of the brush whose scale is more important and more encompassing by concrete circumstances of life and events against whose background their life has passed.

Catalog Dimitar Kirchev

by Daniela Aleksandrova

Vibrant Colours. Oil on Canvas ' 2017

by Pavel Mitkov

ANNOTATION
Pavel Mitkov is a contemporary Bulgarian painter. In 1997 Mitkov passed admission exams in drawing and enrolled in Landscape Design at the University of Forestry in Sofia. At that point, he started his conscious life as an artist. He had, and to this date has, never chosen cliches in life. Many relatives and friends tried to convince him to study at the Academy of Art in Sofia but Mitkov firmly declined, stating that freedom was the most important of all to him. “I have always felt that freedom is the most important thing in the life of an artist. At the Academy, you meet different people who teach you what to do while I already knew. It is daft to be capable of something and have somebody teach you how to do it.”
The present catalog presents his latest .

Orthodox Theology & the Sciences. Glorifying God in His Marvelous Works

by Co.

ANNOTATION
“Indeed man is a theologian in his relation to God and scientist in his relation to the universe, whilst the universe is the laboratory of God in which man has been placed as custodian. This combination of the theologian with the scientist, i.e. theology and science, is crucial and very significant, because it allows man to bypass falsehood and recover the truth. For example the theologian-scientist transcends false astrology through true astronomy, or he is in a position to distinguish the nature of light from the light of the stars and to recognize the properties of the former. In other words, he is called to demythologize the world from fanciful theories which do not correspond to reality and to perceive the transparency of the universe, which points in turn to the transcendental basis of its existence in the ceaseless and inexhaustible energy of the Creator Word.” Protopresbyter George D. Dragas, Ph.D. “Far from addressing a minority in society, the Fathers spoke boldly and to the whole world. Erudite, cosmopolitan and conversant with contemporary philosophy and culture, the Fathers proclaimed a message of universal import. For them, the world was in the Church, not the Church in the world. By this, of course, they meant that the world was created for the Church and that the Church revealed the truest vocation of the world.” Protopresbyter Maxym Lysack, Ph.D.
