Osmanskata ekspanziia 1453-1683 g.

by Aleksandur Stoianov

ANNOTATION
The Ottoman Empire and its only existence always have been a painful issue for the Bulgarian historiography and for the Bulgarians as a whole. It cannot be in another way – 5 centuries under the Ottoman yoke did not bring any positives for the Bulgarian people and at the same time the negatives are more than obvious and they have left a long-lasting trace in the social, political and even in the national development of this people. But this blind hate to the Ottoman empire from the Bulgarians is turning into a burden for them. It is more than necessary for the existence of a more sober and clearer approach to the “Ottoman empire” issue and its place in the Bulgarian history. Pure hate and contempt, the underestimation of the Ottoman empire as fully retrograde political structure cannot explain the fact that in continuation of more than 300 years it continuously grown and captured new territories defeating all of its enemies in numberless battles and giving the knowledge for the military action to Early-modern Europe (XIV-XVIII centuries) along with the most notable names in the art of war. This is not an empty anti-Bulgarian praise but the naked reality. The Bulgarians have been defeated and subordinated to one of most successful military systems in the whole European history and that is why it is in extreme importance for the Bulgarians to understand how exactly the Ottoman military and political system functioned in order easily to reveal similar contemporary manifestations and not to make the same mistake again.

Rannoto khristiianstvo, Iustinian i Iustiniana prima

by Vesela Traikova-Alshadi

ANNOTATION
This book presents an attempt for rethinking of the problem for Archbishop Justiniana Prima, established by Jistian the Great in East Illyric prefecture during 6th century as well as its connection with the early Christianity on the Balkans. The questions in the book are considered in the context of the Emperor’s policy, of the specifics of the local churches in Illyric established by Apostle Paul and of the rivalry between the churches in Rome and Constantinople in the struggle to contain the Illyrian dioceses. The text studies the motives which led Jistian in the establishment of the archbishopric, its nature as well as the reasons for its recent disruption.

Tsurkvata na apostol Pavel v Ilirik i sudbata i do sveti Kliment i sledovnitsi mu

by Vesela Traikova-Alshadi

ANNOTATION
It is strange why people talk so much about the Orthodox Church, about the Roman Church established by Apostle Peter as well as about the Constantinople one which follows Apostle Andrew. And these churches are considered as Apostolic and most authentic ones. And at the same time the churches which follow Apostle Paul on the Balkans are missed, people don’t talk about. This book points the reader’s attention namely on them. They were established by the Apostle at the beginning of the spread of Christ’s word outside Israel and they were built on the basis of the remains from the Thracian mysterious culture and knowledge, which Apostle Paul himself came in contact with.

Razstrelut na Khristo Botev

by Veselin Ignatov

ANNOTATION
Hristo Botev (1848-1876) was a Bulgarian poet and national revolutionary who fought against the Ottoman slavery on the Bulgarian lands. Botev is widely considered by Bulgarians to be a symbolic historical figure and real national hero. Who killed Botev? This is one of the biggest riddles in the Bulgarian history. The school textbooks say that Turkish Zappeti killed him. But is it really so? Were there a traitor in his closest circle? What was the role of Nikola Obretenov, Georgi Apostolov and of his other friends? Veselin Ignatov digs the facts, compares the sources, pursuing the clues and presents Botev’s shoot as a criminal process.

Konstitutsionniiat debat v Bulgarskiia parlament prez XIX vek

by Veselin Metodiev

ANNOTATION
“"The Constitutional Debate in the Bulgarian Parliament in the 19th Century" is the beginning of a new series of NBU. Even at that time, the Bulgarian National Assembly, in both its forms - the Simple National Assembly and the Grand National Assembly - engaged in a constitutional change. The two cases under consideration differs in their end. If there is only an attempt in the first one, there is a real change in the second. The book reveals the debate in the parliament by trying to present the various opinions and the developed arguments. The specific changes - the number of the deputies, the length of the parliamentary term, etc. – even today they are of interest to the society. That is why I hope the interest is not only amongst professional historians and lawyers, but also among a wider audience.” – the author.

Pokushenieto nad Iustinian

by Georgi Sotirov

ANNOTATION
Second edition by the revision of the historian and art-critic – Asen Chilingirov. The first edition was published originally in English in 1974 with the original title “The Assassination of Justinian's Personality”. An article was published in 1887 where the journalist James Bryce criticize the scientists who trust the life of Justinian written in a Slav language by his mentor Theophilus (Bogomil). The article was an assassination over the personality of one of the most important rulers in the world history. Justinian is also a significant person regarding the political and spiritual history of the Bulgarians. 130 years after Bryce’s murderous article, in this book all of his arguments against authenticity of the Slav life of “St. Precious King Justinian” were refuted and this emperor was canonized by the Bulgarian Church. Furthermore, Ivan T. Murnavich – the discoverer of Iustiniani Vita and of the Manasses Chronicle and who was blasted by Bryce as a naive and deceiver - was exonerated. One of the appendixes to the book is the text of Iustiniani Vita – presented for the first time in complete translation in Bulgarian.

Iunachnite dushteri na bulgarskata boina slava

by Georgi Turturikov, Tonia Turturikova

ANNOTATION
The fact that in the Bulgarian historiography the combat experience of the females is not really mentioned and is a bit disturbing. This gave light to the book. It is about every woman, who has fought for and stood by their beliefs, no matter the period of time, with a gun in their hand. No matter of the type of weapon even the simplest one was used by these women to fight.

Podmenenata zhurnalistika

by Desislava Andreeva, Fani Mazdrashka-Mikhova

ANNOTATION
Is black and white the picture of journalism-PR? What are the factors that overlap the two tones? Has the ratio of forces always been like the present days? How have the ideas of the various schools changed for these relationships? What they should be - can the confrontational model be replaced by consensus one? Do the global trends apply for local media levels? On these wide range of questions Dr. Desislava Andreeva and Dr. Fani Mazrazka try to answer in the monograph "Replaced Journalism. The PR in Journalistic Content". This trying definitely worth it!

Koruptsionna Bulgariia. Vol. I. 1989 - 1997

by Edvin Sugarev, Khristo Khristov, Petur Buchkov

ANNOTATION
The big advantage of this research work is that it collects in one place numbers of corruption affairs in Bulgaria which combined in one place demonstrate the consequences from corruption, the distortions in the whole public environment and the reproduction of these practices on a higher level. The motives for realization of this project are: - The broad spreading of corruption practices in all areas of the public life in Bulgaria; - The lack of state’s real efforts to stop this process; - Non-working court system and - Dramatic lack of justice, These are just the most important factors which hinder the development of the civil society and which cause huge emigration wave which made a demographic crisis in Bulgaria. The constant presence of corruption scandals which relate to prime-ministers, ministers and deputies devalue not just the democratic values but also the trust in the politics as a whole.

Temelko Neshkov - Dosie. Iugoslaviia sreshtu dushata na Makedoniia

by Zoia Andonova, Ivan Nikolov - compilers

ANNOTATION
Temelko Neshkov is one of the most prominent fighters for the rights and the freedoms of the Bulgarians in the region of Macedonia. He was prisoned for 12 years in the former Republic of Yugoslavia. At the end of the 70-s of the 20th century he and his family managed to find settlement in the Western Europe and during the last decades he lived in Bulgaria. He died on December, 17th 2013 at the years of 85. His file was extracted not from the Bulgarian Secret Services’s archive but from the powerful Yugoslavia’s State Security. The book presents the cruel, the duration and the debauchery of Tito Judeo’s regime – from its very beginning in 1945 to the complete federation breakup and the consequences which it caused on the different republics. Neshkov’s file begins with his arrest while his group has been captured in 1947 and then some of them were sentenced to death. The second part is about the period when Temelko came out of prison but he didn’t give up – he continued meetings in the borders of Macedonia with his friends, with his prison’s comrades; they help each other. Then he married and his daughter was born. Then the Yugoslavian regime prisoned him again when his daughter was just 8 months old and he was sentenced to 8 years of prison. The third part is about the period when he was “free” – from 1962 to 1977 and about all of these pursuits in one or another way, the ups and downs and about when he had to escape the former Yugoslavia…

Istoriia na Bulgarskata akademiia na naukite. II part 1947-2014

by Iliia Todev

ANNOTATION
This book is part 2 from a historical auto-portrait. A portrait of the biggest scientific institution in Bulgaria which history is longer than the history of Modern Bulgaria as it started from 1869. It is an “auto” due the fact that the portrait is drawn from some researchers from one of the institutes of the academic society – The Institute for Historical Researches. It is also part 2 from the “History of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences” by naturally continuing the story from part 1. Part 2 starts with the starting of the Law for the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences accepted in 1947 when Bulgaria was already under the Soviet influence. The story in the volume presents BAS’s history in Bulgaria under communist rule and then it continues after the big changes after 1989 (the fall of communist rule in Bulgaria). The present, second part completes the story from the first one and thus it makes possible the oldest institution in the Modern Bulgaria to has its complete history.

The book is a compilation of reports of a conference, dedicated to the 830 years since the riot of Asen and Petar, the beginning of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, the new Bulgarian capital in these years – Turnovo and 780 years since the resurrection of the Bulgarian Patriarchy. Only for this period of time the two brothers managed to turn Bulgaria to a Great Strength, thus calling the book "Velikite Asenevtsi" (“The Great Asenevtsi”).

Zavladiavane na durzhavata. Protivodeistvie na administrativnata i politicheskata koruptsiia

by Co.

ANNOTATION
The eleventh Corruption Assessment Report of the Center for the Study of Democracy is focused on the most potent form of corruption affecting Bulgaria: state capture. The report builds on years of CSD experience in the regular monitoring and assessing of the spread of administrative and political corruption. This is now complemented by an assessment of the mechanisms by which powerful lobbies capture government decision making to the benefit of shady business interests and the detriment of public good. The report finds that these two manifestations – administrative corruption and state capture – are closely linked because they represent different facets of the same phenomenon.

Iznudvaneto i reketa v ES: faktori za uiazvimost

by Co.

ANNOTATION
Extortion racketeering has been long pointed out as the defining activity of organised crime. Although in recent years this crime has not been among the top listed organised crime threats in the strategic EU policy documents, it still remains ever present in European countries. The seriousness of the phenomenon has been recognised at the EU level and the crime has been listed in a number of EU legal acts in the field of police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters. The report Extortion racketeering in the EU: vulnerability factors analyses extortion racketeering forms and practices in six EU member states. The analysis disentangles the risk and the vulnerability factors for enterprises in two business sectors – agriculture and hospitality – as well as in the Chinese communities. Drawing on the results of the analysis, the report suggests new policies for tackling extortion racketeering in the EU. This report has been produced with the joint efforts of the Center for the Study of Democracy, Instituto de Ciencias Forenses y de la Seguridad – Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Transcrime – Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano and Vitosha Research and with the support of Guardia Civil in Spain.

VMORO ot Ilinden do Balkanskata voina /1903-1912/

by Slavi Slavov

ANNOTATION
The book studies the Internal Macedonian-Odrine Revolutionary Organization (IMORO, a national-liberating organization of the Bulgarian people at the borders of the Ottoman Empire from the end of 19th to the beginning of the 20th century) through one of the most dynamic and at the same time – most dramatic periods of its development – from Ilinden Uprising to the Balkan War. The study aims to give more authentic image of the Organization which probably goes some way with the idealized and mythologized ones about it. Special attention is paid to the separation which marked IMORO through the whole period the book study as well as to its various relationships with the Bulgarian country – the only real ally and the only source of material support for the revolutionary movement.

Ubiistvoto na Vasil Levski - Vinovnitsite

by Ianko Gochev

ANNOTATION
After the book about the Russian-Bulgarian relationships in 3 volumes “The Russian Empire against Bulgaria!” which was published in 2005, its author – the Bulgarian historian Ianko Gochev went to enlighten the death of the Bulgarian Apostle of Freedom – Vasil Levski. In the course of this the author took special attention of two very important moments: 1. Breaking the ugly claims about the Bulgarian nation as a traitor and soulless observer in capturing, sentencing to death and murdering of the Apostle. 2. Enlightening of the judicial farce against Vasil Levski and in particular – clarification of Russia’s role in the face of her representative at these times – count Nikolai Ignatiev for the condemnation and hanging of the great ruler of the Bulgarian revolutionary organization. Clarification of the role of Russia – an empire which could not tolerate an independent Bulgarian revolutionary organization which fought for independent Bulgarian state! Due this, by its representative – count Ignatiev it did everything possible for the destruction of the Bulgarian revolutionary organization and the murdering of its great leader! An historical truth which until recent times the Bulgarian scholars were afraid to speak and to write about. With the present book the author Ianko Gochev raises one more monument of the Great Bulgarian hero and people’s saint – Vasil Levski.

Tialoto pri sotsializma - rezhimi i reprezentatsii

by Daniela Koleva - compiler

ANNOTATION
Even they look biological constants, the bodies actually are hysterical, culturally situated and mediated. That is why the questions about body and fleshiness, about representations and regimes of fleshiness during socialism are legitimate. Which are the interlacements and the relationships between the social and the fleshiness, how does the symbolic order transport into somatic one? The authors in this volume approach to this topic by various aspects of the bio-political imaginary: from the scientific theorizations to and the resulting medical and educational practices, then to the juridical and institutional discourse about the health and the reproduction, to the efforts for modeling of consumption and finally to metamorphosis of fleshiness in the memorial background of the times of socialism. In its aggregation, the studies demonstrate that the body as a storage of reasons has no immediate political belonging and by this reason it can care effective political and ideological messages.

ANNOTATION
This book studies one of the most vital and resistant phenomena in the Bulgarian traditional culture – the doll. The doll’s characteristic is made upon wide range of materials which presents it through its name, type, function and materials it has been made from. Presented are also the idol-dolls made from natural materials (leaves, straw, cereals, flowers etc.) as well as the most ancient doll images. The book bolds the dolls’ typography according its anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and natural doll-like activities. The study puts an accent on the typography of doll according its function as ritual (sacral), artistic (satiric), for play and every day one. An important point in the book is the presentation of the doll in the everyday life in the past of the Bulgarians: in the home puppet theatre, as a scarecrow, in the family wedding and birth rituals etc. During the years the dolls lost their mystical powers and their functions are reduced but they have a big contribution in preserving of the historical memory of the Bulgarians.

Markeli - Khristiianskiiat grad

by Stavrof. ik. Pavel Gurbov

ANNOTATION
There are not so many towns – not only in the Bulgarian history but also in the world one – which arose on a place thanks for that on the first place there a Christian temple was built. One of them was the Bulgarian town of Markeli, the relics of which are 7,5 km far from the town of Karnobat. There are not so many people (mostly specialists – historians and archaeologists) who know something about this medieval town. But it – as without doubt the researchers define it – “is one of the remarkable medieval monuments in the whole region of South Bulgaria”, “the largest object in today’s South Bulgaria… - a place of the first of the two biggest military successes of Bulgaria during the First Bulgarian Kingdom”; a place which has kept the remains of a unique martinium – the oldest Early-Christian temple in this part of Bulgaria. The identification that the town of Markeli was situated in the north-east part of Thrace, next to Karnobat is the result of 30 years long systematical archaeological excavations. These sources are the main source of evidences about the Christian life in this town and as the title of this book (Markeli – The Christian Town) suggests, this work is interested mostly of this aspect of the Markeli’s history.

Is there even a change? The rubrics of different critics included in this book, there are many perspectives for the tendencies in the modern philosophistic and literary debates.

Imenata na khotelite - mezhdu onomastikata i turisticheskata nauka

by Pelo Mikhailov

ANNOTATION
The study investigates how the experts' understanding of place names of hotels in the system of onomastics has changed. The author accepts that the names of the hotels are kytrony (names of buildings), which in turn are a section of urban clusters (names of objects within the settlements), and they are in turn a type of toponyms (names of geographic objects). It is justified the need the names of the hotels to be called with a separate term and to form a separate entity in the system of kytronyms. A xenodohonim, built by Greek, is proposed. Xenodochio 'hotel' + onim, from onom 'name' = hotel name. It is suggested that with xenodohonims the names of all accommodation (overnight) places recognized by the Tourism Act (2013) to be marked - hotels, motels, apartment resorts, villas, tourist villages and villas, family hotels, hostels, boarding houses, rest guest houses, guest rooms, guest apartments, bungalows and campsites, as well as tourist huts. The published text deals with the problem of hotel names only as a category in onomastics. The study is of a discussion nature.

Usilni godini

by Dimitur Talev

ANNOTATION
With the trilogy “Arduous Years” the young Dimitur Talev (1898 – 1966, one of the prominent classical Bulgarian writers) made a try to realize his inner conviction that “something big must be written about Macedonia”. The Ilinden-Preobrazhenie uprising which lighted with its fires his childhood did not give him a peace. Along with that the idea that this event must be presented in broader flamboyant image was in his head. This is how the epic novel narrative the – trilogy “Arduous Years” was born – a courageous attempt of the young author to reveal the preparation, the culmination and the defeat of the uprising.

by Mikhail Nedelchev

ANNOTATION
Peio Iavorov (1878 - 1914) was a Bulgarian Symbolist poet. He was considered to be one of the finest poetic talents in the fin de siècle Kingdom of Bulgaria. Yavorov was a prominent member of the "Misal" literary and cultural group. Ot Pliton do Visarion

by Tsocho Boiadzhiev

ANNOTATION
“This text is the basis from the lecture course led by me to students of Philosophy specialty at the Sofia University. Of course the text here represents just the schematic content of the course. The live atmosphere of communication with the students remains elusive. Stylistically, the text follows the recommendation by Etienne Gilleson to read the author we study with a pencil in hand. At the same time in some extend, it stylizes the discussed controversy, ignoring to some extend the church, ideological, political etc. context of the discussion. This is done with the only purpose to be shown up at maximum the own philosophical in the intellectual controversies during the last decades in Byzantium. The hope is that a similar “extract” will show how inappropriate and misleading is the frequently raised question “Is there such of thing as a Byzantine philosophy?” The recent studies affirmed the immanent philosophicality of the Byzantine culture. This book will add some more arguments in this direction.” – the author.

"I ended my teaching career, but what shall I do now, I can't leave my wife feed me!? – If I make a poultry farm with three chickens and a rooster, I would need a big yard; I can't become a chimney sweep – my head spins when I climb high places; I should open a pavilion and sell toothpicks, soap, combs and hair pins – but I need money. Finally, I started writing again! You don't need a yard, neither money – just paper, a pencil and a tuck! Iatrogeniia ili osvobozhdavashta psikhoterapiia

by Nikola Shipkovenski - Prof. Dr.

ANNOTATION
This book puts the essential question about attitude and the behavior of the medical person towards the patient. The term iatrogenia (from the Greek words iatros – doctor and genesis – origin) covers the possible harms which medics or people without medical education could do to ill and even to healthy people. It is about the negative influences which upset mentality mentally. The thoughts, the arguments and the conclusions of the author are based on his forty years long professional experience as a medic (cited over 80 observations) as well as on rationalization of the positions of his prominent colleagues from various areas of the medicine. This is a book-migrant but with happy destiny. Firstly the author wrote it in German and published in GDR in 1965. Its second edition was published in Tokyo in 1975 thanks to Prof. Osamu Nakata from Tokyo University on Medicine and Stomatology who with the help of his colleagues translated it convinced that it will be helpful to the Japanese doctors. Then the book spread to USA and Switzerland in 1977 and received many positive reviews from eminent specialists from various countries. The present edition – now in Bulgarian – is devoted to 110th years from Prof. Shipkovenski’s birth and to 40th years from his death.

Skitashti zapiski

by Ivan Dragoev

ANNOTATION
"Wandering Notes" is a kind of auto-anthology of exotic places. These essays were started and written on the road - amongst the exoticism of Indian stations, African cafés, on the French and Spanish roads to Santiago de Compostela. The collection contains many pages of thoughts about the culture and the politics (recalling the execution of Saddam Xueseyi). An interesting insight for the unfamiliar view would be the postscript to “Moroccan Notes” with the articulation of the Islamic process over the centuries and the relationship between the Arab tribes and Christian Europe. With the review at both the coexistence and unshakable coexistence of wealth and poverty, and the reflections on the incomprehensible for the foreigner attitude to life and death attracts "Indian notes". In front of the reader is a revealer of roads "The narrator of roads cannot stay in rest because his body is soaked with the sun and the wind on the road, he is tattooed with the paths he has gone through”.

Suvremenno bulgarsko izkustvo. Imena. Zlatka Dubova. Predstavena ot Aksiniia Dzhurova / Modern Bulgarian Art. Names. Zlatka Dubova. Presented by Aksinia Dzurova

by Aksiniia Dzhurova

ANNOTATION
Text in Bulgarian and English. The collection "Modern Bulgarian Art. Names" presents 100 eminent Bulgarian painters. Bulgarians crossed the threshold of the XX century with only one finished system – that of folklore. This fact will be crucial for the way they will regard modernity consuming it thirstily to the level of copying or ignoring it with skepticism. As far as Zlatka Dubova was concerned, modernity was to a great extent necessary information. One needs it in as something compulsory in one's development without is being oppressive or subjugating. So, she passed by modern trends and remained fully connected to traditional woodcarving gravure and lithography which continued the trend started by Revival Period prints and realized the message of Vasil Zakhariev. She raised up woodcarving to the modern level which granted her a lasting place in Bulgarian art of the second half of the XX century. Lasting and lonely. Without followers today. Who was Zlatka Dubova? She was born in the town of Velingrad in 1927 and even as a schoolgirl she would fill the blank sheets of her notebooks with drawings. When she entered the Art Academy in Sofia, graphic art became her fortune. In her first participation with illustrations of Liudmil Stojanov’s novel Mehmed Sinap in the Academy's graduates’ exhibition, she demonstrated not only familiarity with literary material and drawing skills but also knowledge of the life of Bulgarian Muslims from the Rhodope Mountains with whom she spent some of her childhood. Later, she would deliberately become the artist of the Adam's Rib film, followed by the films Kraicerat Nadezhda (The Hope Cruiser), Haidushka Kletva (Guerilla Oath), Golemanov and First Lesson. What made Zlatka Dabova's woodcarvings and lithographs popular and, as the modern saying goes, attractive, commercial, wanted by big museums across the world and Bulgarian by homes and offices. In fact, Zlatka Dabova was one of the most typical representatives of this trend which, in the 1960s, we used to define as traditional-decorative style of Bulgarian graphic artists. That was a name which actually indicated the authors' thematic preferences and not the marks of a distinct style. Her art was related to the group of artists who were the continuance of the Revival Period graphics tradition of authors such as Vasil Zahariev, Pencho Balkanski, Mana Parpulova, Zafir Jonchev, Pencho Kulekov.

Georgi Mashev / Georgi Mashev

by Co.

ANNOTATION
This is an album presenting the life and the works of the Bulgarian painter Georgi Mashev (1887-1946). In contemporary monographs, texts and articles about Georgi Mashev it is claimed that the artist is undervalued or forgotten by us. This statement is unreasonable as his painting has always been appreciated. In the period of Socialism Realism he was officially renounced as a decadent artist but he has never been forgotten by the intellectual audience and the spiritual elite in Bulgaria. He is a renowned author and creator. Mashev's painting is an evidence that works of art are significant when they are genuinely suffered. An obvious example of this life phenomenon is the artistic conflict between Georgi Mashev and his teacher Professor Petko Klisurov because of whom he was evicted from the State School of Art in 1906. This compulsory eviction is an eventual trial which actually gives him very extensive artistic culture during his study at Petersburg Art Academy in 1907 and subsequent study at the Brussels Art Academy in the special department of painting of Prof. Edmond Richer 1909-1910. Becoming familiar with the vast Russian culture and art, followed by the European painting gives him the chance to rediscover his desires and dreams. Respectful of modern trends in the European art he aspired to show his Bulgarian teachers how far they were from the real contemporary art, He returned to Bulgaria where his catharsis conflict exploded and he graduated from the State School of Art in Sofia under Prof. Ivan Markvichka, Stefan Ivanov and Ivan Angelov in 1912. After the two world wars Georgi Mashev came down with tuberculosis but he was healed thanks to the money raised at a charitable exhibition organized by his friends and colleagues from the South Bulgarian Artists Union. The demons of war which he painted 1914-1916, during which period he was mainly a military artist, did not manage to spot his creative ascent. That was the second volatile period in his life during which he personally faced the trials of fate. Having overcome his sinister nightmares, he became strong enough to rise and started creating tirelessly his mature works. Methodically and consistently he managed to fulfil his dream with hard work and new plastic approaches. His personal friendships with Dimcho Debelyanov, Dimitar Podvarzachov, Teodor Trayanov, Nikolay Raynov and others from their circle add to and fashion his unique artistic outlook of an author who was while alive identified by the press as the greatest symbolist of Bulgaria. The multiple exhibitions he attended during the years, the favorable reviews that he received, are an evidence of the fact that he has always been valued as a great Bulgarian artist. What is more, he received exceptionally high acknowledgment of his talent and unique style at the World Art Center in Paris where after only a year stay in 1931 he participated with his work "A Portrait of a Lady in Brown" at the most prestigious European art exhibition "Saloon of Fine Art". The painting was published in the accompanying catalogue and provokes a great interest. Georgi Mashev was invited to participate with his work "The Cannibal" in the Saloon of Humorists and with the cycle "Adam and Eve'' he won the award at "Saloon of the 100" as a regular member of the exclusive circle of the French artists-humorists. In the 30s and 40s of the 20th century Georgi Mashev taught, painted and was full of artistic energy. He devoted himself thoroughly to art and his friends. They and his sisters constituted his whole world. It was a world solely devoted to art. Nobody could imagine that the demons which the artist painted would materialize as a nightmare in his life, which was smooth and quiet despite the frequent health problems. On 10.01.1944 after the air-raid in Sofia his home, his atelier and a large number of his painting burnt. His favorite sister Anna Masheva died in the flames, who herself was a sculptor and a teacher. In that personal apocalypse for Georgi Mashev the creator broke down psychically under the blows of fate. The formal marriage with Slava Nikolcheva and his attempts to work in Pazardzhik did not help him overcome the heavy depression and the artist lost his life untimely heartbroken by the demons of war. The demons, which he painted for symbolic paintings, materialized like in Oscar Wilde, which states that dictum by created in art later happens in real life always emulates real art. Despite the vicious joke of fate, the artist did not actually die because he is alive in the world of art. He lest rich art heritage. His painting is so frightening and meanwhile provoking real curiosity because it take us beyond the material, in the realm of dreams and vast spiritual worlds of artistic freedom and surrealistic emotions. Today is defined as diabolic because it is replete with controversial and mutually exclusive messages and emotions. Seemingly it is unreal, but at the same time it is like a storm forecaster foreseeing what the final outcome of our eternal human conflict accompanying our life would be. It is not only provoked by life, but also dictates it. In the rich heritage of the author different genres and styles are present, but the main emphasis of his work is on symbolic painting. Symbolism inspired him to create one of his greatest masterpieces – “Nightmare”, Art Exhibition Plovdiv, in which the, demons from the dreams ambush a sleeping innocent bare woman.

Nebesni zakrilnitsi na doma / Heavenly Patrons of Bulgarian Homes

by Rumen Manov

ANNOTATION
“Since many years the home icons excite in me the curiosity and inspiration with their variety and grace. I see them as a symbol of home peace and comfort. I always see them not just as Orthodox religious works but also as artworks where the strong, indomitable Bulgarian spirit which survived the twists of the centuries is. It is like the doors of home iconostasis symbolize the doors to Heaven, to this other world where people prays goes to. It is like the home icon is a shortcut, a window to God and the saints are the mediators between the Heaven and Earth. Every home have its own mediator, its patron whom the most intimate and honest prays are sent to. And while watching these orthodox artworks I question myself. Which occasions these icons were witnesses of? And if they could speak, we would certainly know the real history of the Bulgarian Orthodox believe. These home keepers are the Bulgarian memory, a part of the Bulgarian roots. That is why their preservation is important.” – the author. The present album contains high quality photos of home icons. The text in the album is in Bulgarian and in English.

VIVA ITALIA ! Traektorii na italianskoto izkustvo ot XX i XXI vek / Percorsi di Arte Italiana del XX e XXI secolo

by Co.

ANNOTATION
The exhibition presents different aspects of Italian art from the 1950s to present days. It comprises 114 works of artists from the collection of the Italian collector Carlo Pali. Laura Monaldi is the exhibition's curator. This is the first attempt to present comprehensively modern Italian art in Bulgaria. The exposition is a representative sample of the Italian art from the 20th and 21st century, comprising continuity and innovation, collective quest and artistic monologue, different groups, schools and individualism. An original visual story of the art after WWII, about several generations of artists and the theoretical justifications that drove individual artists in one direction or another. This story begins in the 1950s with the attempts of individual artists to distance themselves from the deep-rooted relationship with classical Italian art and find untraditional forms for expression. It then passes through the 1960s and 1970s reflecting how the traditional categories of art making were overcome, and continues to important movements in the 20th century, reaching the restless modern times whose art is hard to put in theoretical frames. The exhibition shows different directions of development in almost all artistic forms (painting, sculpture, photography, graphics and installation) and tries to capture the interface of visual and plastic arts, music and poetry It rediscovers the original identity of the of 20th and 21st century Italian art. The exhibition is organized by the Italian Institute of Culture in Sofia and the Sofia City Art Gallery under the auspices of Sofia City Municipality. The present exhibition catalog is in parallel text in Bulgarian and Italian.

Combating Transnational Terrorism

by James K. Wither; Sam Millins - editors

ANNOTATION
As the title suggests, Combating Transnational Terrorism seeks to highlight the global nature of the threat and emphasize the need for cooperative, international responses. Fittingly, there are typically 40 to 50 different countries represented on any given iteration of the PTSS. The book is therefore aimed at a truly global audience, including readers for whom English is often a second or third language. As a result, the writing style seeks to present complex topics in a way that is accessible for non-native English speakers. In line with the PTSS, the focus of the book is strategic, rather than operational or tactical. It is intended to assist CT professionals to think broadly and strategically about the phenomenon of terrorism and our responses to it. It recognizes that CT practitioners have to deal on a daily basis with a highly complex problem that embraces political, economic, informational, judicial, intelligence, military, law enforcement and many other factors, both domestic and international. However, each chapter also utilizes real world case studies and relevant examples to emphasize the practical and policy issues involved. Like the course on which it is based, Combating Transnational Terrorism promotes both a comprehensive understanding of the nature of the threat and the full range of measures required to deal with it.

Extortion racketeering in the EU: vulnerability factors

by Co.

Shadow Power: Assessment of Corruption and Hidden Economy in Southeast Europe

by Co.

ANNOTATION
The current report, prepared by the Southeast European Leadership for Development and Integrity (SELDI) — the largest indigenous good governance initiative in SEE — makes an important contribution to the regional approach to anticorruption. It provides a civil society view of the state of corruption and comes in the wake of the 2014 SELDI comprehensive assessment of the various aspects of the legal and institutional anticorruption environments of nine SEE countries. In 2016, SELDI followed up on these assessments with an update of corruption monitoring and a special focus on state capture in the energy sector and the corruption–hidden economy nexus. The report underscores the need for broader political action for reform, which seems blocked or narrowing across the region. Inside pressure for such action has been suffocated by economic necessity and/or ethnic divisions, and the ossification of political and economic establishments. Outside pressure, delivered mostly by the European Union has been seen as wanting in relation to the size of the problems in the past couple of years due to a succession of internal and external crises. The authors underline that in none of the countries in the region has there been a clear sustained policy breakthrough in anticorruption though efforts to deliver technical solutions and to improve the functioning of the law enforcement institutions, mostly with support from the EU, have continued and even intensified in some cases. This has led to further slow decline in administrative corruption levels but at the expense of waning public support for reforms and of declining trust in national and European institutions.

State Capture Unplugged: Countering Administrative and Political Corruption in Bulgaria

by Co.

The Interior Room

by Kerana Angelova

ANNOTATION
Set in the remote mountain area of Stranzha in South East Bulgaria, Kerana Angelova’s novel explores vital tensions between human physicality and spirituality in a narrative spanning four generations. The dramatic action takes place amidst a pervasive but threatened natural environment, of ancient forests, ruthlessly logged and a sea which is overfished. Stranzha is a place that is a place that is both specific and otherworldly, in time and out of time, a place where old pagan/Christian practices persist, despite the changes in the outside world - vicious territorial wars, ethnic cleansing and communism. Remote Stranzha proves to be an ideal stage for an entirely original examination of the human condition. Christopher Buxton, novelist and translator This novel tells about several magical lives. It believes in the internal shelters, in the perseverance with which, despite our trials, Good pursues us while we are building our human homes and giving birth to our human children.
