His killers are caught. To this day, however, the most important thing is unknown - who and why sent them? 101 years later, again in Sofia, several bullets put an end to the life of the former Bulgarian Prime Minister - Andrei Lukanov. People were arrested for this death, but their sentences were supporting. What connects the two murders that shocked Bulgaria at different times? Perhaps the fact, that the instigators will remain unknown. Or something else - that two great politicians had the chance to return to power...

The documented statements for the events on the Balkans in the summer of 1913 – the Balkan War, which have been collected in this book, prove that the Bulgarian population from hundreds of villages in the region between the Black Sea, the Aegean Sea, the Doiranian and the Ohrid Lake were subjected to ethnic cleansing and that they became a victim of a genocide. Barely some months after the glorious victories of the Bulgarian army in the Balkan War, which led the liberation of the Bulgarians in the regions of Thrace and Macedonia and which led to the London’s Peace Treaty, then Bulgaria suffered probably the most terrible national catastrophe in its history – hundreds of Bulgarians became victims of a cruel genocide in 1913. Today, the survivals incorrectly are called “refugees”. The aim of the book is bring to the society’s attention this tragedy of Bulgaria and to prove through all documented testimonies for the fate of the Balkans in 1913 that the Bulgarian people in these lands was subjected to extermination.

This study is one of the first of a kind publication on issues of political science in Bulgaria. It has an interdisciplinary character and is as much an advantage of the author, as it is a disadvantage to science, so it isn’t normal that after nearly a quarter century of post-communist transition there is no such an issue yet. The monograph breaks some narrow-minded views on political science and reveals the deep historical roots of politics through the centuries.

The Bulgarian power structure during the government when the political party - GERB ruled Bulgaria (2009-2013) is not based on law and principles, but on bare force and dependence. The chaos, bestowed in Bulgaria from GERB threatens to destroy much more than what the other corrupt or destructive Bulgarian governments managed to destroy. They managed, in the best case, to annihilate the state and/or the economy. GERB, however, breaks down the society - the very opportunity for the people to live together in the same territory. /The author/. The book is an analysis of the ruling of GERB with a journalistic style and with a lot of stories and faces but this analysis is has a strong philosophical base.

One of them is that Rosen Plevneliev has become president to "warm up the place" for Boyko Borisov.    This book explores the Russian-Bulgarian (intercultural) reciprocity, focusing on a specific event that occurred in the 1920-1921. In Sofia, in the settlements of ten thousand Russian refugees and immigrants, a new movement appears in the Russian cultural philosophy, which calls itself "Eurasianism". There tends to be a deep and sustainable Russian-Bulgarian intercultural understanding of the two cultures falling into the trap of a vicious convenient stereotype which acts today as it did in the 20s. The book studies the theoretical capacity of a country to get rid of this stereotype: examines the sensitivity of the philosophical Bulgarian culture to the fundamental intuitions of the personalism.

The Bulgarian society is now overtired from the "Gypsy issue", which became particularly relevant (and ruthlessly exploited) in recent years. Breaking the mass stereotypes that prevail in science and social practice is possible only if there is a real understanding of their subject (in this case the gypsies). This is the main purpose of this book, which is aims to appeal to both students from different disciplines, as well as a much wider readership.

This book recalls the former Western radio listeners in Eastern Europe, the thrill of the forbidden truth. To those for whom the Cold War is history, it presents insightful analysis and original sources of the political processes in the Soviet camp and the accompanying dynamics of international relations during the period of de-Stalinization. Dianko Sotirov is known in Bulgaria as a defender in the People's Court and subsequently a diplomat, directly involved in key events immediately after Sept. 9, 1944. During forced emigration, he found his calling in the hard and principled work against the communism as a political commentator. His talks in London are valuable evidence about the content of the ideological confrontation between the East and the West. This intelligent analysis and devastating criticism of the communist regime are among the few effective means to break the Iron Curtain.

This monograph studies the first period (681-852) in the formation of the political ideology of the First Bulgarian State in the context of the Byzantine political theory for the existence of only one ecumenical state – Byzantium. The author traces two stages in the development of this process: the struggle of the new Bulgarian country to keep its territorial integrity and political independence; and the arising of the Bulgarian ruler idea and the concept for unification of the Bulgarian polity with the Byzantine one with the idea for the conquest of the Byzantine capital – Constantinople. Special attention is paid to the political importance of the signed contracts between the Byzantine empire and the Bulgarian country in 681, 716, 774, and 815.

The author of this book analyses the contemporary Bulgarian society, as he looks deep into the Bulgarian reality and the mindset of the people. "To get out of Bulgaria, because here nobody poured slop in your bowl - only fattening cattle waits for someone to fill their bowl, while someone else fills their plate themselves – so, to get out of Bulgaria, without trying to change it means you do not want professional realization. And if you do not want it so badly, it means you're not confident in your abilities. And if you have failed, then you really aren’t... and those who left actually did a good deed. They purify the genetic pool from dirty, unfit blood. The Bulgarian doesn’t have unhappy childhood. The Bulgarian has a slave’s mindset. And because of that he constantly looks back and recalls not only to himself but to others its main drawback. He constantly seeks to be portrayed as a martyr. The Bulgarians do not live, the Bulgarians suffer.”

The book is dedicated to one of the major problems in the still poorly researched traditional culture of the Turkish heterodox Muslims (Kizilbases, Alevi) in Bulgaria. Based on a variety of sources - historical and hagiographic writings, oral traditions and rituals data – the study presents seven of the most revered in the past and today heterodox Muslim saints. Along with the opening and the emphasis on individual features in each image the author pays attention to the messages of the legendary texts, the result of centuries-old desire of the community to build their collective identity in relation to other ethnic and religious groups and the need to continually reflect on the relationship nature-man-society. One chapter is devoted to Kaz Ana Sultan – s female image rarely mentioned in the Muslim hagiography. The book is of interest to ethnologists, folklorists, historians of culture, as well as every intelligent reader.

This book reflects the origin of orchestral conducting in Bulgaria as a natural historical process, closely linked to the development of opera and symphonic orchestras in Bulgaria in the early twentieth century. The development of this art is a reflection of social and cultural attitudes in the Bulgarian society and expresses the trends in the music community for the inclusion principles enshrined in the Western musical tradition. The question of what constitutes the art of orchestral conducting is closely related to its role in the functioning of the symphony orchestra, because the conductor is first and foremost a musician, who has the ability to shape the artistic character of the musical work, then - the person who builds the relationship between himself and the music and a complex organism called orchestra. It is this last element which the complexity of conducting business focuses into.

This monograph studies and analyzes the Balkan features in the Bulgarian texts devoted to the birth rite, paying particular attention to the terminology, rituals and folklore materials. Childbirth is seen as an important part of the model of the world, closely related to its other spheres (calendar, folk medicine, demonology, etc.). Facts of language and culture are interpreted as an indivisible whole. Vocabulary, phraseology of birth and naming ethnography of speech behavior demonstrate the typical Balkan medley of "ours" and "foreign". The perceptions of the relationship between the birth and life scenario reflect the complex intertwining of ancient mythological aspects and the elements of the popular Orthodox beliefs. The book presents field recordings of recent years carried out in towns and villages, and ethnolinguistic maps.

In the late 19th and early 20th century the debates about "Veda Slovena" go beyond the academic sphere and the book is widely publicized. In the controversy surrounding the authenticity and content of the book, aside from the scientists, undisputed authorities in the literature such as Ivan Vazov, Pencho Slaveikov, Liuben Karavelov get involved. This book offers the reader the original edition. "Veda Slovena" is presented with a design consistent with the ancient Slavic soul. The original foreword by Stefan Verkovich to the first book of the collection is translated, and in its preface most clearly are described the ideas of the book’s compilation.

In this book there is no gossip, but it is not academic reading either. It is a kaleidoscopic eye towards the contemporary literature. The title has three reasons: First, Anzhela Dimcheva likes to write literary criticism, which is fun for her. Second, it doesn’t "undress" the authors to find their shortcomings, on the contrary – she dresses them in love. Third, most of the analyzed books talk about love. Why about love? You will hardly find all the answers in the book, but at least some of them - you definately will!

And the first hopes ... and the first disappointment. The aim of the book is to look with scorn on the events of the transition, which according to some has been completed several years ago, and according to others, never took place. Why does the transition needs patching? Perhaps because of the feeling that after the euphoria at the end of 1989 has not been built anything completely new.

This book provides an analysis of the economic realities in Bulgaria in the years of its post-socialist development. Over the last few decades a structural change in terms of growing and strong dominance of the service sector at the expense of reducing the share of industry and agriculture has been seen. How does this affect the economic growth in the EU countries? Is there a decrease in performance? Do we observe typical business cycle reorganization changes in the structure during the financial and economic crisis of 2008-2009? How do these trends manifest in Bulgaria? Why does Bulgaria need economic development based on innovation, environmental technologies and health industry? Answers to these questions can be found in the book.

This book tries to present a theory of knowledge that gives a philosophical view of the process of knowledge, but also shows its logic in an undeniable way. This process is orderly and timeless as the day and night. Theory of knowledge gives philosophical interpretation of the world, but there is a clear practical purpose - it can be seen as a personal guide and as a tutorial of the modern manager. The author tries to prove that theory of knowledge is generally available for both human beings and the whole universe. According to the Bible "In the beginning was the Word" - early in the creation of the world. The universe’s way of communication is by waves. Maybe through them we get the initial information which we are born with. The waves are the basis of mobile communication, the core of holographic images and perhaps at the root of things like the deja vu.

On the map of Bulgaria, somewhere in the Eastern Rhodopes, there is a long-forgotten area where time has stopped ages ago, and the place is filled with living ghosts, instead of people. The landscape is lunar and the secrets that land hides are unexpected. The erected stone walls are the only thing that reminds us of the previous turbulent life on these places. The villages were depopulated for some reason and many mysteries are long gone, along with the people who kept them. We can tell our story as we (the authors) experienced it, during our long journey through the Eastern Rhodopes from Smolyan, all the way to mountaintop Vetrenik /Kodzhaele/ on the Bulgarian-Greek border.

Trun region is one of the many Bulgarian regions where Bulgarians have lived for centuries and maintained a pure-spirited mind. In the history of this region, however, there were many ups and downs, times when it was land "forgotten by God and king" and was looked upon with careless disdain. In 1919 its territory was shrunk by the Treaty of Neuilly near Trun, despite the protests by the population, 19 villages of Klisura, and Kostroshevska and Tsaribrodska municipality were cut off and transferred to Serbia. But do we really know Trun in its full depth? Do we know its mountains and fields, and its past? One of the reasons we do not know Bulgaria well enough is that there are still too few books on the different parts of the country. This largely applies to Trun.

For Catholics – Camino, for Muslims – the pilgrimage to Mecca, for the Jews and Christians – Jerusalem. These places of power gather people following a tradition and they give their time and money to give respect to the idea itself and seek its place. But there’s one place in the world where followers from four world religions gather – the sacred mountain Kailas in Tibet. What draws them there? Why for some people even just that one pilgrimage fills their lives with meaning? What is the magic of Kailash?

This book explores what happiness is and how we can achieve it, if at all possible. Where can happiness actually be found? What are the myths that promise a lifelong happiness, once we cover the common requirements for success in life? Their collapse means that there is no magic formula for happiness and no certain path to misery; that nothing in life is a source of joy or sorrow as we believe. Understanding this truth will not only free us, make us stronger and expand our horizons, but we will provide the best opportunity for making the right choice.

The first monuments associated with ancient navigation in the Bulgarian west coast, enter the collection of the National Museum of History (NMH) back in 1978. These are pole anchors found during a regular archaeological expedition near the Kaliakra cape. Objects found by Bozhidar Dimitrov only 3 feet deep in the vicinity of the Black Sea nose. In the following decades until 2012 the collection of "sea" items increased to 155. Undoubtedly, the greatest merit for compiling the collection of stone and wooden elements of ancient anchors is namely Prof. Dimitrov’s. His discoveries were first documented as early as 1967, when with the artist Aleksandur Denkov found two anchors near the island of St. St. Kirik and Iulita (Lazarov 1975, 43). Since 1987 the first NHM underwater expeditions begun near Sozopol, which are associated with the opening of dozens of anchors and stocks. This catalog is the first attempt to present the richness of the Bulgarian museum monuments of the culture maritime shipping.

We are witnessing a renewed in historical exitics, somewhat ignored, somewhat ridiculed, somewhat deliberatelly neglected. Here we have a confirmation of such positive trend in the reading public. This book gives us a refreshing assurance that books can be written with imagination, information, and accuracy. Everything that a good and fascinating historical reading needs. Its story is familiar and mysterious, true and fictitious at the same time. The coast of semi-legendary place in a sea town is the witness of a personal and global drama. Reshaping of Balkan and European boundaries, battles and negotiations, diplomacy and cruelty, the whirlwind of a war, first called the Great, and later more sensibly World War I, is presented in miniatures of humaneness compared to world historical misfortunes. On this background, the author accumulates such diverse and differently sourced information, combines dynamic reality with human emotions and silent love, which becomes a part of historical existence. We can find everything in this book – Balkan temperament and endless love for Homeland, sophisticated social manners and the anguish of personal insecurity of Queen Marie. You can see in it more than you have imagined you knew about the town of Balchik, about the sea, about the untold drama of a woman with a calling to be a queen of a foreign country. The Palace in Balchik, the town itself, the Black Sea, and the Bulgarian lands acquire a special zest. This book opens a page where the places you have senn or you will see by the sea shine with new light and new importance.

The book presents the research efforts of a team of famous specialists in the area of the Bulgarian art. It is unique of its type as it makes for the first time complete view on the Bulgarian art and on the most eminent names from the history of the Bulgarian art. But it is not the usual history – it presents a new point of view on the fate of the paintings, drawings and sculpture as well as on the nontraditional innovational plastic and visual forms in Bulgaria, traced through the prism of the organizational forms of the art life, reasons of their emergence, their aesthetic platforms and activities from 1892 till today. The concrete reasons for publishing of this book are the 120th anniversary from the organization of the first common exhibition of painters from Bulgaria (1892), the establishment of the first union of painters called “Company for Supporting the Arts in Bulgaria” (1893) as well as 80 years from the establishment of the Union of the Companies of Painters in Bulgaria (1931). Thanks to its exhaustive text, visual and meaningful material, the book will be useful as a reliable information basis for those who are interested in the development of the plastic arts in Bulgaria for the last 120 years.

Sternaspid polychaetes are common and often abundant in soft bottoms in the world oceans. Some authors suggest that only one species should be recognized, whereas others regard a few species as widely distributed in many seas and variable depths from the low intertidal to about 4400 m. There are some problems with species delineation and the distinctive ventro-caudal shield has been disregarded or barely used for identifying species. In order to clarify these issues, the ventral shield is evaluated in specimens from the same locality and its diagnostic potential is confirmed. On this basis, a revision of Sternaspis Otto, 1821 (Polychaeta: Sternaspidae) is presented based upon type materials, or material collected from type localities. The sternaspid body, introvert hooks and shield show three distinct patterns, two genera have seven abdominal segments and tapered introvert hooks, and one genus has eight abdominal segments and spatulate introvert hooks. The ventro-caudal shield has three different patterns: stiff with ribs, and sometimes concentric lines, stiff with feebly-defined ribs but no concentric lines, and soft with firmly adhered sediment particles. Sternaspis is restricted to include species with seven abdominal segments, falcate introvert hooks, and stiff shields, often exhibiting radial ribs, concentric lines or both. The geographic range of most species appears to be much smaller than previously indicated, and for some species additional material in good condition is needed to clarify their distributions. Keys to genera and to all species are also included.

With 552 species group names available (excluding misspellings), the Microdontinae constitute the smallest of the three subfamilies of Syrphidae. Paradoxically, this subfamily is taxonomically the least organized of the three: 388 species names were previously classified in a single genus, Microdon Meigen, 1803. The present paper introduces a new generic classification of the Microdontinae, relying partly on the results of phylogenetic analyses of morphological and molecular data as published in other papers, and partly on examination of primary type specimens of 347 taxa, plus additional material, and original descriptions. A total number of 67 genus group names (excluding misspellings) are evaluated, redescribed, diagnosed and discussed, with several implications for their taxonomic status. Of these, 43 names are considered as valid genera, 7 as subgenera, 17 as synonyms. Two generic names (Ceratoconcha Simroth, 1907, Nothomicrodon Wheeler, 1924) are left unplaced, because they are known from immature stages only and cannot be reliably associated with taxa known from adults. The following 10 new genera are described by Reemer: Domodon, Heliodon, Laetodon, Menidon, Mermerizon, Metadon, Peradon, Piruwa, Sulcodon and Thompsodon. A key to all genera, subgenera and species groups is given. A total number of 26 new species are described. A total number of 267 new combinations of species and genera are proposed. New synonyms are proposed for 19 species group names. An attempt is made to classify all available species names into (sub)genera and species groups. The resulting classification comprises 454 valid species and 98 synonyms (excluding misspellings), of which 17 valid names and three synonyms are left unplaced. The paper concludes with a discussion on diagnostic characters of Microdontinae.

Stenamma is a cryptic “leaf-litter” ant genus that occurs in mesic forest habitats throughout the Holarctic region, Central America, and part of northwestern South America (Colombia and Ecuador). The genus was thought to be restricted primarily to the temperate zone, but recent collecting efforts have uncovered a large radiation of Neotropical forms, which rival the Holarctic species in terms of morphological and behavioral diversity. By inferring a broad-scale molecular phylogeny of Stenamma, Branstetter (2012) showed that all Neotropical species belong to a diverse Middle American clade (MAC), and that this clade is sister to an almost completely geographically separated Holarctic clade (HOC). Here, the Middle American clade of Stenamma is revised to recognize 40 species, of which 33 are described as new. Included in the revision are a key to species based on the worker caste, and for each species where possible, descriptions and images of workers and queens, images of males, information on geographic distribution, descriptions of intraspecific variation, and notes on natural history. Several species groups are defined, but the majority of species remain unassigned due to a lack of diagnostic morphological character states for most molecular clades.

This book, written in Russian, was created by a team of Central TION of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The result of the project is a database of digitized biographies, bibliographies, photographs and archival materials of the Russian emigration in Bulgaria. The edition includes bibliographical data for more than 1,000 prominent members of the Russian intelligentsia, having considerable influence on the development of the Bulgarian science, technology, culture, medicine, theology, etc. The book is a basic guide of the Russian emigration in Bulgaria and consists of several sections. The first includes a thousand bibliographic people born in Russia and living in Bulgaria. Another part - descriptions and copies of various archives, museum exhibits, paintings by Russian artists, performances of the Russian Theatre in Sofia, posters of Soviet movies shown in Bulgaria, diplomas and other papers of Russian immigrants, and Russian printed books. The guide also provides a good basis for the future creation of a virtual museum of Russian emigration in Bulgaria.

Paralel text in Latin, Bulgarian, Russian, English. French, German and Spanish. This new edition of “Nova terminologia Medica Polyglotta et Eponimica / Íîâà ìåäèöèíñêà ïîëèãëîòíà è åïîíèìíà òåðìèíîëîãèÿ íà ñåäåì åçèêà” is full supplemented, actualized and revised due to two major reasons: fast development of the medicine as a science, knowledge and practice in the last few years and the extremely enriched information in the fast growing world internet network with the existence of numerous specialized medical websites. The first part of the current edition – “Basic General Glossary” contains more than 15,000 Latin medical terms, sorted alphabetically. In the result of the revision and the actualization, 750 new terms have been added, and 1100 – removed. Part 2 – “Bulgarian-Latin dictionary” covers all of the Bulgarian terms which were used in the edition (more than 12,500). Part 3 – “Eponymic References” is a useful aide because of the numerous (about 3,200) eponymic terms in Terminologia Medica. Part 4 – “What is New in This Edition” explores in greter detail the significant new data included, allowing for quick and precise reference to them in Part 1 of the book or in previous editions of it.

This publication aims to assist and facilitate the adoption of the Latin grammar units, by tracing their impact in the Roman languages. The emphasis is placed upon the morphology of the language. Each morphological unit is designed in the form of basic rules and paradigms, and its specific characteristics are also briefly mentioned. It is a set of language tasks. Their role is to clarify its meaning, to develop skills for the formation and recognition of each set of forms to present its practical application in the language. Each issue also includes notes on syntax, which summarize the most important points in the use of maturity and construction of various types of sentences. In the section "Aliquid plus", accompanying each topic, are presented cultural realities, additional historical information and a set of popular sayings.
