Vanga (1911-1996) is a world famous Bulgarian prophetess that predicted many world events. This book significantly differs than everything that ever has been written about Vanga. This is the first book in which in detail are analyzed events from the practice of Vanga and are explained from a scientific perspective. Scientist stands open on the position that an alternative knowledge, free of speculation, can have a place in the life of modern human, as well as in science. This is a book which proclaims itself against the pseudoscience. The author proves that "talking" with dead is not a miracle. There is also a classification of the clairvoyant abilities of Vanga.

In the 14th century the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander (1331 - 1371) ordered to be made a translation of these chronicles. The translation was made and there were also added 69 illustrations to it by unknown painter in Byzantium manner. More than 20 of these illustrations presents important events from the Bulgarian history. Nowadays the original is kept as a Slavic Code N 2 in the Vatican Apostolic Library. The present luxury edition is the first color facsimile which shows in details the illustrated Medieval Bulgarian translation of the Chronicles. This edition also contains a volume with analyzes of the illustrative cycle by Prof. Axinia Djurova, a presentation of the Old Bulgarian translation by Senior Researcher Vasya Velinova and a special introduction to the book by the prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Library Raffaele Farina.    Text in Bulgarian and English. This is a continuation of the edition "Bulgarskite zemi v evropeiskata kartografska traditsia (3-19 v.) / The Bulgarian Lands in the European Cartographic Tradition (3-19 c.)". This volume is an attempt to present the historical-geographic perspective of the East to the Bulgarians and the Bulgarian lands through the Arabic-written cartographic tradition for the period of so called Golden Age of Bulgaria (9th-14th c.). This perspective is very interesting in some reasons. The Bulgarians came from the Indo-Iranian massive. They migrated from Asia to Europe through the borders of the Persian-Midian world. They established their ethno-cultural model by the huge influence of the millennium aged culture of Ancient Iran. After the conquering of Iran from the Arabians, the Arabian culture changed itself by the influence of the Ancient-Persian cultural tradition. These sources also point to the Bulgarians as one of the active historical factors in the social-cultural amalgam of Eurasia in the mentioned period. The present edition will help in forming the historical-geographic and cartographic segment in the Bulgarian national culture.

A Guide to Jewish Bulgaria

cover, size, type: paperback

Text in English. For the first time in English, this book is for anyone with an interest in Jewish history in Eastern Europe in general and Bulgaria in particular. Bulgaria, one of Europe's least known lands, famously did not report about 48,000 Jews during the Second World War. Many Bulgarians now extol this as a heroic deed, possibly omitting to mention the fate of 11,343 Jews from Aegean Thrace, Vardar Macedonia and Pirot who were sent to concentration camps by the pro-Nazi Kingdom of Bulgaria. Similarly to other countries in Eastern Europe, history is being interpreted according to whoever is in power and does the talking. The debate, if there is any, focuses on who is to take the credit for the rescue: the Communist Party, the Orthodox Church, a bunch of forthright MPs who openly opposed the planned deportations, or the power of Bulgaria's civil society. These questions generate other questions. If the Bulgarians were so good to their Jews during the war, why were thru so few Jews left in the Bulgaria of the Warsaw Pact? What happened to their heritage, a remnant of at least 18 centuries of Jewish presence in these lands? "A Guide to Jewish Bulgaria" will take you to the relatively well-known Jewish heritage sites in Sofia, Plovdiv, Samokov, Pazardzhik, Ruse and Shumen, but will also detour off the beaten track to the lesser and sometimes unexpected sites of Jewish interest in Vidin, Lom, Silistra, Dobrich, Varna, Burgas, Yambol, Stara Zagora, Dupnitsa, Kyustendil, Gotse Delchev and many others. Richly illustrated with superb photography and voicing independent research and opinion, "A Guide to Jewish Bulgaria" is designed to be a journey through both territory and time: illuminating the backgrounds while directing through the topography. Many of the monuments described are hard to find and in various stages of disrepair. Some are poignant, others are stomach-churning. But once discovered, they will hold a reward as they will open up the gateways to a fascinating if largely forgotten part of Europe's Jewish heritage.

The medieval seals collection of the National Archaeological Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is the oldest in Bulgaria. It includes nearly two hundred seals accumulated over the museum's long history. The first seal entered the museum as early as the first year of its separate existence in 1892, the second one in 1893 and the third in 1894. Towards the year 1934 the collection amounted to nearly 159 specimens, of which 84 were acquired from Istanbul, while the remaining 67 were discovered in Bulgaria. In the past seventy years or so their number has not increased much. Other collections were formed in the country during that time. The total number of Byzantine seals found in modern Bulgaria has already surpassed 3,300 specimens. The collection shared the fate of the other monuments of the Archaeological Museum; it suffered bombing, as a result of which the original inventory book was destroyed. The current one is a reconstruction made by Todor Gerasimov. Some specimens published by Nikola Mushmov in 1934 were probably lost again as a result of the same air raid. They have also been included in the present catalogue noted as missing and most probably destroyed during the bombing. The present book is the most current edition which presents the collection. Each description begins with the inventory number of the seal; in cases when it is not indicated, it means that the seal is missing.

Lead ampules, enkolpia and icons from the 12th–15th centuries. The present study focuses on a group of monuments of Byzantine applied art recently unearthed on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria. All are made of lead and represent part of the pilgrimage items produced in the second largest city of the empire -Thessaloniki, associated with the miracles and relics of St. Demetrius. In addition to the patron of the city whose relics begin to exude myrrh, here are venerated other local saints as well - St. Theodore, St. Matrona, St. Teodulus, St. Frontonus, some of whom are also myrrh-gushers. Very often the images of St. Demetrius are accompanied by effigies of his direct followers Nestor and Loup, as well as the military saints George, Theodore and Procopius. The study devotes some space to all pilgrimage objects whose terminological definition and classification raises the question of continuity between early-, medium-and late Byzantine ampoules, pilgrim tokens, philacteria, souvenirs etc., which can be generally labeled as eulogia. The preservation of relics in specially made small size artefacts, decorated with a selection of images and scenes, enables the possibility of their easy distribution in all parts of Christendom. Usually these are relic holders or reliquaries. Nowadays, only single copies with images of St. Demetrius can be connected with Thessaloniki. They are made of gold, silver and cell enamel cell and contain relics of the saint. Most of them are kept in the treasuries of famous Orthodox monasteries and Western European cathedrals, as well as in world famous museums and galleries. The Byzantine author Manuel Philes calls them enkolpions-reliquaries. The presence of a whole group of expensive reliquaries shows that besides the mass production of eulogia of cheaper materials such as lead, in Thessaloniki were also made reliquaries of precious metal for pilgrims of high rank, senior clergymen and guests with diplomatic missions. The lead koutrubia ampoules are meant for storage of myrrh (fragrant oil), whose production from the 12th century onwards is associated with the cult of the defender of the city, St. Demetrius, and together with him the other local saints, whose images decorated the sides of the ampoules. Different is the case of the lead koutrubia ampoules for the storage of myrrh (fragrant oil). In the 12th century the ointment is associated with the cult defender of the city, St. Demetrius, and possibly, along with him, also other local saints, whose images decorated the walls of the ampoules. It oozed only from the bodies of miroblitos (myrrh-gushing) saints. Through it the pilgrims communicated with the relics and the miraculous power of saints. Of another nature and artistic decoration are the extremely rare lead enkolpions with the scene The miracle of the Greek youth rescued by St. Demetrius and a leaved cross, as well as an image of the three warrior saints Theodore, George and Demetrius and a leaved cross, made and used as pilgrim tokens as it seems during the Latin rule in Thessaloniki. So far unknown was a series of bilateral eulogia icons cast of lead with varied iconographic repertoire, through which one can also can follow the trailof pilgrims in Southeastern Europe. The images and stories presented on them are usually directly related to the protection of those who wear them - pilgrims and soldiers. The study of items of similar function and decoration, generally called eulogia, i.e. various pilgrimage tokens or souvenirs, enables to ascertain certain features and mutual interferences, which appeared during the crusades in the art of Byzantium and the Latin West. The Thessaloniki lead ampoules, enkolpions and icons indicate not only the manufacture and distribution of eulogia in the middle and late Byzantine period, but also reflect the mass nature of their production and the diversity of art subjects on these pilgrimage products. The presented new material from Bulgaria includes more than 100 lead eulogia found during archaeological excavations or acquired as purchases in the museum network of this country, as well as those owned by private collectors. They are successively discussed in three groups, accompanied by a general catalogue. The newly found ampoules, enkolpions and icons significantly expand the circle of monuments of Byzantine metal plastics associated with pilgrimage. The material in question creates a real picture of the production in Thessaloniki of this mass products intended for pilgrims from the whole Christian world. The availability of primitive traits in the design of some images and the cheap materials used show that these are objects which were widely popular. Their recovery in Bulgaria traces the paths of pilgrims from Thessaloniki to the Bulgarian towns and fortresses in the 12th—14 th centuries.

The twenty two contributions are arranged thematically according to the topics of the conference: diffusion and trade; production centres and workshops; typology and chronology.

Text in German. The majority of the tourists (especially those who are visiting for the first time Bulgaria), have some expectations - thanks to Internet guides, travel guides, pamphlets and other information sources. They will learn a lot about the country from them, but too little about the real Bulgarians. Like every nation, they also have their own traditions, culture and way of communicating in the real life. The present book will help the tourists better to understand the ordinary Bulgarians - their beliefs, values and behavior in different everyday situations. Starting with the strategic and windy place of Bulgaria, through the food, the drinks and dancing to the business and bureaucracy. Reading the book also can be felt one of the unique charactesistic of the Bulgarians - their sence of humor and self-irony.
