This a research in the field of the philosophy of the politics. Should the today's political orders must be changed with new better one? The book tries to answer this question with one original theoretical proposal based on political hermeneutics of Sophocles' tragedy "Oedipus the King" and to polemical reading of key texts of modern political philosophy. The identified primary structures of the political formed in the classical Greek polis are referred to the current transformation of the basic political categories such as sovereignty, power, violence, resistance, political subject and political community. The possibility of their reconceptualization as critical actors in the release of the political subjects outlines the utopian horizon of the book.

In the Balkan Wars, Protogerov was one of the organizers of the Macedonian-Adrianopolitan Volunteer Corps and Assistant Commander of this military unit. During the First World War, he commanded the Third Infantry Brigade of 11th Macedonian division and then became commander of the Bulgarian troops in the Serbian-occupied region of Pomoravlje. There he suppressed the Toplica Uprising. Later, as commandant of Sofia, Protogerov suppressed the Bulgarian Soldier's Upspring. After World War I, Protogerov was elected as one of the leaders of IMRO. In 1924, IMRO entered negotiations with the Comintern about collaboration between the communists and the Macedonian movement and the creation of a united Macedonian movement. Protogerov and Petar Chaulev probably signed the so-called May Manifesto about forming a Balkan Communist Federation and cooperation with the Soviet Union in Vienna. Later, Protogerov denied through the Bulgarian press that they had ever signed any agreements, claiming that the May Manifesto was a communist forgery. Shortly after, Todor Alexandrov was assassinated in unclear circumstances and IMRO came under the leadership of Ivan Mihailov, who became a powerful figure in Bulgarian politics. The result of the murder was further strife within the organisation and several high-profile murders, including that of Protogetov himself.

In the end of the middle Ages and the beginning of the new times the Euro-Asian world was shaken by a huge religious-political conflict. The new Ottoman Empire turned into a huge Islamic colossus that crushed the Balkan countries and it expanded to the walls of Vienna. Most of the historians today say that it was a military and religious confrontation between the Islamic and Christian countries. But as strange it looks, there is also an antithesis. In the period when Europe lived with the "fear from Turkey" and in which Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror considered conquering Italy there were some intellectuals who tried to impose against the policy of conquest and extermination but for cooperation and even for unity of the religions. These were famous scholars and politicians from the Ottoman, the Orthodox and the Catholic side. The present book is devoted to their lives and teachings.

This book traces the fate of the most important communist-era monuments in Bulgaria, from their construction to this day. The book contains 34 photographs and detailed information about the history of the monuments, compiled by the author over the course of three years. The title of the book is borrowed from graffiti written over the entrance of the Memorial House of the Bulgarian Communist Party at Buzludja, which poignantly illustrates the fate of the communist-era monuments in Bulgaria. Conceived as expressions of national pride and reverence, most of them today are looted and neglected. Whether they commemorate the feats of the Soviet Army, the April Uprising of 1876, or the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885, they all share a common fate – to be silent symbols of a forgotten past.

This kind of dictionary is published for the first time in Bulgaria – a dictionary of the political parties. It contains data about all of what happened in Bulgaria for the last 20 years – the established and the restored parties. The book tries to answer how much are the parties after 10.10.1989 (the fall of the communist rule in Bulgaria) – are they 100, 200, 300 or 400? The names index, which is supplied the edition, except the reference function, provides insight and characteristic for the period "political nomadism". As a "background" of the origin and development of the political parties in Bulgaria after 1989 the edition presents a "Chronicle of Events". Some of these events are directly related to the parties - Congress, elections, political events. Others seemingly have nothing to do with political history during this period. However, they all show the characteristics of the so-called Bulgarian transition.

Saint Paisius of Hilendar (1722–1773) was a Bulgarian clergyman and a key Bulgarian National Revival figure. He is most famous for being the author of "Istoriia Slavianobolgarskaia" ("The Slav-Bulgarian History") - one of the most important work for the beginning of the Bulgarian National Revival. The present book is devoted to the 250th anniversary from the creation of the "Istoriia Slavianobulgarskaia", but it differs from the other books with jubilee character. Instead of the traditional monographic research, the author aims to deepen the knowledge for one or another aspect of Paisius's work in close connection with its reformist role. The first parts reconstruct moments of the atmosphere in which Paisius wrote "Istoriia Slavainobulgarskaiia". Problematized are versions of his status among the anonymous monastic environment in the middle of the XVIII century and to the reformers, his contemporaries on Mount Athos, such as Reverend Paisius Velichkovski and Eugene Voulgaris. A number of texts are devoted to the transition from classical type copies of "Slav-Bulgarian History" to its options.

An international team of archeologists, medievalists, historians of literature, language and art, philosophers and ethnologists explores the specific political, social, linguistic and behavioral mechanisms which shape the veneration of the saints and determine its manifestations in various areas of life - from everyday culture to the elitist cultural production. The articles offer an analysis of the factors that influence the establishment of the saints' cults and show how, in turn, the lives and deeds of the saints have become a role model for the people of Eurasian region over the past 1600 years.

Vladimir Dimitrov - Maistora (1882 - 1960), was a Bulgarian painter, draughtsman and teacher. He is considered one of the most talented 20th century Bulgarian painters and probably the most remarkable stylist in Bulgarian painting in the post-Russo-Turkish War era. His portraits and compositions have expressive and vivid color, idealistic quality of the image, profound symbolic strength and originality. The main topic which he explores is the relation between Man and Nature. Although he does not consider himself religious, he regards Nature as governed by a supreme spirit; he shares that the main purpose of his paintings is to elevate man and humanity, to bring it closer to harmony, represented by this omnipresent spirit. The present book contains his works.

Bulgaria is the member of the European Union with the largest Muslim minority that is not exclusively immigrant: Turks havå uninterruptedly lived in these lands for centuries. Both the Ottoman and modern Turkish culture have left a significant impact on the national consciousness and identity of modern Bulgarians. However for many and varied reasons that have to do with political attitudes and propaganda especially during Communism, the influences have been downplayed or ignored. From the aroma of freshly baked borek and borrowed words like keyif, balik and kahir to pehlivan wrestling. Hidrellez songs, and the stories about Nastradin Hodzha and Hitar Petar; from the presence of Jesus in the Qur`an to the scary stories of beans turning into demons; from chotgiya to cholgo and from bulamac to baklava; from the relative calmness of Pax Ottomana to the forcible migrations, name-changings and the so-called Revival Process: The Turks of Bulgaria highlights the history, customs, culture, beliefs, music, cuisine and traditions of the biggest ethnic minority in Bulgaria. The Turks of Bulgaria is a collection of articles by prominent Bulgarian researchers in history, philology, musicology, archaeology, religion and ethnology, who depict Turkish culture in Bulgaria and analyse how it influences Bulgarian culture, to reach the conclusion that drawing strict demarkation lines is difficult and often impossible. It is a book as much about the Turks in Bulgaria as it is about the Bulgarians themselves.

The present study examines the unity in the sociolinguistic diversity of the European Union. The European languages are presented as among the few common European achievements which have been fulfilling their European functions for a long time. The latter today constitute the foundation of the sociolinguistic structure of the European Union. In that structure, the languages are changing their original sociolinguistic functions and the language communication in uniting Europe attains new sociolinguistic dimensions which specificity and regional originality fill with meaning and contents the terms “Euroglossia” and “Eurolingualism”, coined to reflect the unity in the sociolinguistic diversity of the linguistic regime of the European Union. The book is intended for specialists in the sphere of sociolinguistics, sociology of language, general and applied linguistics, for psychologists, anthropologists, political and cultural scientists who work in the sphere of European integration, language policy and linguistic human rights protection, but also for a broader circle of readers who are interested in the social being of European languages.

This is an ordinary Bulgarian story written engaging and humanly, with a lot of feeling and understanding of the characters. No aggression, no imitations, no corny schemes. One incredable novel about the transition in Bulgaria from communist rule to market economy. A novel about that the expression "The home-land is where you live" is not true, but it appears that the emigrant is everywhere an emigrant. But afterall the novel is not a dark story. It has no "bad" heroes, and the good ones are not superhumans, nether angels, neither even martyrs. Beacuse the true heroe in this book is the goodness. And according the author the goodness is the real normality.

This is the Ideographic Dialect Dictionary of the Bulgarian Language. On its structure this dictionary has significant differences with the encyclopedic dialect dictionaries which usually have differential character, namely 1) they present lexis which is not literary; 2) they present dialect words which formally are equal with the literary ones but have other meaning; 3) they presents words which by their sounding changes or word-forming features have significant differences from the literary ones. The entries in the present dictionary are structured in a different way – in a view of the concepts expressed by words in the literary language. Headword of a dictionary entry in this dictionary is the literary word and after it are systematized and presented the dialect words with the same meaning. The dictionary also reflects the relations between gender and type as the type concepts usually are missing in the literary language but there are words for them in the dialects. In general, this dictionary is a unique lexicographic study which presents the dialect variety in Bulgaria and thus presenting the rich traditional Bulgarian culture. It also can be used as a tool for researching the relations of the Bulgarian language with the other Slav languages.

English and Bulgarian text. The beginning of the research work of the Thracian coinages has been started more than two centuries ago. The main reason for this is the fact that the Thracian civilization is narrowly connected with the Greek one. Almost hundred years have passed from the moment when the prominent Bulgarian numismatist Nikola Moushmov has published his capital work "The Antique Coins on the Balkan Peninsula and the Coins of the Bulgarian Tsars". The information for the coinages of the Thracian tribes and rulers and for those of the Paionean and Scythian king has increased significantly during this period. Large number of unknown coin types have been published, a second group has been re-dated and a third one - attributed to the coinages of other rulers. All of these points determine the necessity of such a book, which containes possibly the most complete information in this field. It is unthinkable for anyone to compile such catalogue without the labour of tens of researchers and numismatists, who are cited and to whom we owe gratitude. The described in this Catalogue coins are one of the first minted in Europe. Their number is significantly limited in comparison with the coin production of ancient Greece, Roma and Byzantium but strictly they are the ones to determine the economic, social and aesthetic trends in the means-of-payment production. In short, they are the beginning of the classical numismatics. And exactly because of this fact it is very strange that this fractured information has not been collected and summoned together and a common picture, attested in these first expressions of the material and spiritual culture, of that time has not been presented. The present work aims to fill, at least partially, this vacuum. Data for all Thracian coins which have reached us is included in the Catalogue. Nominals, coin types and variants are described together with their metrical characteristics and approximate datings. The more significant publications are marked for those who need additional information. The classes of rarity according to our examinations are included to help the collectors in their activities. Once more for them, we will remember, that the price of a certain coin depends on the first place on its stage of preservation and after that on its class of rarity. The illustrations are an important advantage for the users of the catalogue. Almost all of the depicted coin types are presented with photoes or drawings, which helps the readers to find their way in this not an easy field. All the illustrations are shown with the real dimensions of the coins and, where it is possible, for the small nominals - in scale 2:1. The larger part of the coins of the Thracian tribesand rulers are distinguished for their extremely high class of rarity, significant art value and even for their enigma. These are the facts which determine the rising interest of the collectors towards the Thracian coinages during the last several decades and which make them a good investment as well.

Serdica is the old name of today's capital of Bulgaria - Sofia. Serdica certainly has an ancient and rich history long before its first "Golden Age". This study, however, focuses exclusively on the turning point for the Roman Empire and the Christian church over a period of the middle of the III century to the middle of the VI century. The aim is not to be explored but to be brought out the main stages in the rising of the Roman and Christian Serdica, to be indicated the main reasons that led to this rising and to be focused on its nature. The emphasis is on the close relationship between the transformation of the Empire and the Church, on the one hand and on the other hand - on the urban development, cultural traditions, the population and the rulers of the city. The basis of the book are the historical sources, preserved their local and foreign memory for the city and the huge work of the Bulgarian archaeologists started in the late XIX century and especially active in the XXI century.

The Sofia Art Gallery (SAG) is a museum with longstanding traditions. Its role is to present the facts of Bulgarian cultural history in an analytical and modern way and to actively intervene in art developments by original and impressive projects. The project curator Dr. Maria Vassileva has invited 43 prominent Bulgarian art and cultural historians belonging to different generations and fields of work (lecturers, researchers, museum curators, directors of art galleries, museums and nongovernmental organizations, art critics, curators and freelance researchers) to each choose an artwork from the Sofia City Art Gallery collection regardless of historical period, genre or media, an artwork they like and consider to be important, justifying their choice in a text comprising a single page. The project aims to look into the factors that single out an artwork as valuable and important for the development of Bulgarian art from today’s perspective; to establish whether selection criteria have changed as compared to the ones applied in decades past; whether the best textbook examples of artworks have stood the test of time; whether the language of art criticism has changed; what is the personal stance of the most prominent Bulgarian art historians. The point is to look closely at an artwork and analyze it both in view of its specific features and the features it shares with other works belonging to the same historical period.

Parallel text in Bulgarian and English. The archaeological investigations in Sboryanovo National Archaeological Reservation are of articular importance for the study of the past of Ancient Thrace. The favorable natural conditions, abundant water sources, lush vegetation, and the animal diversity attracted humans to this region of present-day Bulgaria since time immemorial. Most significant are the remains of the culture of the northern Thracian tribes that are known from the written tradition under the collective name Getae. Imposing tumular necropolis, situated on both sides of an important Thracian city, along the river Krapinets, outline the place of the large political, economic and cultural center of the Getae in present-day Northeastern Bulgaria in the Hellenistic Period. This book presents the work of the author in this area. The author - Associate Professor Maria Chichikova is the archaeologist, under whose leadership in 1982 has revealed the biggest and most delicious secret reserve "Sboryanovo". The book is richly illustrated with photos of finding and architecture diagrams from the area mentioned above.

This book focuses on the social phenomenon of migrations and human mobility in their socio-cultural, ethnological and linguistic aspects, showing the historical roots, specifics and stages of development, with the example of the Balkans and the diaspora of Balkan people scattered in different directions and on different continents. This issue became even more up-to-date in the last decade of the 20th century, a “decade of transition” for Eastern Europe, characterised by the movement of new waves of emigrants and gastarbeiters to Western Europe, America and Australia. We are faced with an ever increasing diversity and intensity of the movement of people, information, goods and services, both within the separate Balkan states and across their borders. Often, current social processes demonstrate a clear continuity with traditional social practices and cultural patterns; referring to a “Balkan culture of migrations and mobility” is becoming more and more justified.

The water scavenger beetle genus Berosus Leach is the largest of more than 170 genera in the superfamily Hydrophiloidea. Although it is better known that some aquatic beetle groups, many new species in the genus remain to be discovered. This work treats the Berosus of Venezuela—a country that lies at interchange of several major Neotropical regions, including the Andes, the Amazon, the Guiana Shield, and the West Indies. Previously, only nine species of the genus were known from Venezuela, while this work records 36, including fourteen new species. Among these new species are several that are only found in water-filled holes and seepages on ancient granite outcrops in the Guiana Shield region in Amazonas and Bolivar States. Venezuela’s central Llanos, or savannah region, is particularly rich in species. Several species that were previously known only from Brazil have their ranges extended far northward. It is likely additional fieldwork will yield yet even more discoveries.

The European species of Omphale are revised, including 37 species, of which 11 are new. All species are described, thoroughly illustrated, and included in gender-specific identification keys. Two new morphological character-sets are introduced for the classification, male genitalia and wing interference patterns (WIPs). Both sets are used to identify species, and the former is also useful for classification of species-groups. Hosts are known for 14 species and all are primary endoparasitoids of immature stages of gall-midges (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). Host preferences are unique for each species, suggesting host specialization as a driving force for speciation. Several of the species are known only from females or have a strong female-biased sex-ratio, indicating thelytokous parthenogenesis. Distributional data point to a pan-European distribution for most species. New synonyms and combinations affect the nomenclature in subfamily Entedoninae.

This major study on heterodontosaurid dinosaurs is the first to review the taxonomy, morphology, functional anatomy, and phylogeny of this important early radiation of small-bodied herbivores. Heterodontosaurids persisted for approximately 100 My, from Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous time, during which they evolved some of the most sophisticated dentitions for processing plant materials. Some species required reevaluation to establish unequivocally their status as heterodontosaurids, such as Echinodon from rocks in southern England, one of the first and smallest dinosaurs ever described. Tianyulong from northern China is described in more detail in the study and is shown to have unusual skeletal proportions, including a relatively large skull and very short forelimb. A new taxon, Pegomastax africanus gen. n. sp. n., is described from southern Africa with a short parrot-shaped bill. Tooth replacement and tooth-to-tooth wear is more common than previously thought among heterodontosaurids, which the author argues are herbivores despite their prominent caniniform teeth. Heterodontosaurds appear to have split early in their history into a northern group with primitive, subtriangular crowns and a southern group with deeper crown proportions.

Three aviculariine genera endemic to Brazil are revised. Typhochlaena C. L. Koch, 1850 is resurrected, including five species; Pachistopelma Pocock, 1901 includes two species; and Iridopelma Pocock, 1901, six species. Nine species are newly described: Typhochlaena amma sp. n., T. costae sp. n., T. curumim sp. n., T. paschoali sp. n., Pachistopelma bromelicola sp. n., Iridopelma katiae sp. n., I. marcoi sp. n., I. oliveirai sp. n. and I. vanini sp. n. Three new synonymies are established: Avicularia pulchra Mello-Leitao, 1933 and Avicularia recifiensis Struchen & Brandle, 1996 are junior synonyms of Pachistopelma rufonigrum Pocock, 1901 syn. n., and Avicularia palmicola Mello-Leitao, 1945 is a junior synonym of Iridopelma hirsutum Pocock, 1901 syn. n. Pachistopelma concolor Caporiacco, 1947 is transferred to Tapinauchenius Ausserer, 1871, making the new combination Tapinauchenius concolor (Caporiacco, 1947) comb. n. Lectotypes are newly designed for Pachistopelma rufonigrum Pocock, 1901 , Iridopelma hirsutum Pocock, 1901 and Pachistopelma concolor Caporiacco, 1947. Cladistic analyses using both equal and implied weights were carried out with a matrix comprising 62 characters and 38 terminal taxa. The chosen cladogram found with X-Pee-Wee and concavity 6 suggests they are monophyletic. All species are keyed and mapped and information on species habitat and area cladograms are presented. Discussion on biogeography and conservation is provided.

A revision and the first phylogenetic analysis of the widely distributed plant bug genus Tytthus is presented. All 24 species of this genus, including five described as new, prey exclusively on planthopper (Delphacidae) eggs, making them of great importance on agricultural monocots. Two species have been used successfully in biocontrol programs to suppress populations of sugarcane delphacid on sugarcane and brown planthopper on rice. All species of Tytthus are relatively small, but the tiny brachypterous males of one species, ranging from 1.08–1.30 mm long, rank it as possibly the world’s smallest known plant bug. Members of this genus are found in nearly all biogeographic regions, including 18 restricted to the Nearctic and Neotropics and three from the eastern Oriental and Indo-Pacific regions. There are also two Holarctic and one circumtropical (Afrotropical, Neotropical, and Oriental) species. A hypothesized relationship with several Nearctic plant bug genera suggests a New World origin for this group of important predatory bugs.

Centuries of exploration and discovery have documented the diversity of life on Earth. Records of this biodiversity are, for the most part, distributed across varied and distinct natural history collections worldwide. This makes the task of extracting and mobilising the information within these collections an immense challenge. In this special issue of ZooKeys, 18 papers by 81 authors examine progress and prospects for mass digitising entire natural history collections. These papers provide a snapshot of activity, in what is a fast moving field that is seeing ever-increasing degrees of collaboration across disciplines and between collection-based institutions. Examples of research covered by these articles include a description to efforts digitise 30 million plant, invertebrate and vertebrate specimens at NCB Naturalis in the Netherlands; new scanning and telemicroscopy solutions to digitise the millions of pinned insect specimens held in the Australian National Insect Collection and its European and North American counterparts; citizen science projects being used to crowdsource the transcription of thousands of specimen labels and field notebooks; and new data portals providing central access to millions of biological specimens across Europe. Many of these projects deal with the unique challenges associated with major collections that have built up over several centuries, with different communities of practices and different user communities. Despite many differences, standards for collection acquisition, preservation and documentation are broadly consistent, meaning that there is sufficient common ground to bring together the enormous amounts of data that are being exposed through mass digitisation efforts. These data will become the new frontier for natural history collection management and research in the next decade.

The New World species of the subgenera Allotrichoma Becker and Neotrichoma (new subgenus) (genus Allotrichoma) are revised. For phylogenetic perspective to this revision, we studied all genus-group taxa within the tribe Hecamedini and reassessed their cladistic relationships. Our phylogenetic study for taxa within the genus Allotrichoma was done at the species-group level, and we attempted to approach this globally by examining species from throughout the world and placing them into appropriate species groups. Within Allotrichoma, we recognize three subgenera. All known species from the New World are described with an emphasis on structures of the male terminalia, which are fully illustrated. We more than double the number of species known from the New World with six of 12 species in the subgenus Allotrichoma being described herein, and in a newly described subgenus, Neotrichoma, two of the three species from the New World are also described.

This revision significantly documents a continuing trend in the discovery and documentation of New World shore flies (Diptera: Ephydridae). Two genera of the tribe Discocerinini are treated: Facitrichophora, new genus, with all four included species being newly described, and Polytrichophora Cresson with 19 species, including 11 that are newly described. Previously, eight species were known from the New World. The authors emphasize structures of the male terminalia, which are fully described and illustrated, in the recognition of species and species groups. In addition, detailed locality data and distribution maps for all species are provided. Much of this increase has resulted from a greatly improved sampling of the New World fauna, which documents an ongoing need for field work and better taxon sampling of earth’s shore-fly fauna.

Acarological studies in Bulgaria start in 1907 (water mites) and 1921 (terrestrial mites). So far 1673 species of Acari (Acariformes and Parasitiformes) have been reported (252 Acaridida, 420 Oribatida, 616 Prostigmata, 344 Mesostigmata and 44 Ixodida). They belong to 630 genera and 213 families. The real number of mites species living in Bulgaria is expected to exceed 3000. The checklist is preceded by a short review of the history of the acarological research and is followed by a bibliography of 477 titles. The systematic position of many taxa is made up-to-date and many names are introduced for the first time in Bulgarian acarological literature. Most Bulgarian acarologists either died, or retired and are no more fully active. New acarologists are needed.
